We are ‘trialling’ a new website. Its adoption depends upon you, your participation and your feedback. To start with I need you all to join. You can be a supporter and that’s great. As a member you see other things that others don’t see and can contribute to forums etc. If you have a role in the club then please request that too. You can be set up with many roles; player, member, coach (select the right team), manager (select coach too please), team administrator. Its great but it needs you.

Remember – you asked for it now please get on board!

All quiet on the Eastern front!

Yes I know it was the Western however I have to admit to have been quiet of late. Combination of work, tours and the silly season with dinners has made it difficult to keep on top of things. I also think sometimes it is good to take time off and reflect. Reflect on the season gone, the highs and lows and start the planning for the season ahead. BUT... before we do that we have some important events ahead to complete the season.

First we still have the small matter of the senior dinner on the 3^rd June. Why so late? Combination of an elongated season, County matches and other commitments. However you have until this Sunday – yes tomorrow – to book your place as it is going to be a busy one. See Stewie or Mike Brown for a ticket - £25 per head.

Following on from this we have two more key events so put them in your diary. Friday 8^th July is the Club Awards Dinner. This is where we celebrate achievements across the whole club and recognise people for their involvement. Main awards include Volunteer of the Year, Coach of the Year, Manager of the Year and Team of the Year. I hereby officially open the nomination process. Please send your nominations (and reasons why) for the above awards directly to me from which we will make a short list and then a winner. We are looking for nominations from every team and age group BUT we also want you to come and enjoy the evening. The last couple of years have been a great success and we are looking forward to another great night. Tickets will go on sale next week but if you want to come please book with me and/or Lisa. We would like to see a table from each team; it is a great opportunity for you to bring your other half and thank her for supporting the club too!

After this on the Sunday we have the AGM. This is where you will hear about the performance and the results of the season just finished and the goals and objectives for the season ahead. I made a call for volunteers earlier in the year. We will outline our plans and the new structure and objectives for the season ahead as we enter into Phase 2 of our Development plan. If you have the club at heart and are a member please come – we have some exciting plans and we want to share them with you.

Who knows, who cares but the point is she has sung her song. Yes it's a sad song! Yes it's a loud song! And yes this year it's our song! The season is over and so is our 'first' stint in National 3.
Last week I was deliberately quite. What was done was done and there was nothing I could have said to have changed it. Yes we were beaten by 1, yes one point but hey that's our season all over. It's not for me to discuss the ifs, buts and maybes. The words from last week had to come from the team and from no one else. I understand the team meeting on Tuesday was open and frank...too little too late but ce la vie. The response was massive! Going to Stockport and putting them to the sword and them having to suffer their first home defeat of the season on the eve of their championship winning party. Good luck next year guys enjoy yourself in National 2 and well deserved.
As for us, well next year we will be in the North East leagues again but this time as a National 3 side playing down a level. This season has taught us some lessons. We can play and compete at this level. We need all 18 to give 100% however we can't carry players. So either we carried some people the previous year or some people weren't as committed this season as others. Next year we have another batch of players coming through and an opportunity for them to shine.
As for the 2nds and 3rds, great finish to the season lads.
Well done to both the U13s and the U18s this weekend. Better luck next time to the 13s and congratulations to the 18s. So we had 5 out of 6 age groups in the final and 2 cup winners. Well done to the colts - 17s and 18s - county cup winners both!

Battle of Waterloo

The Battle of Agincourt was noted for its use of the English Bow! The Battle of Waterloo was known for its shrewd leadership and tactical execution against a larger force. In both cases the weather played a major part in influencing the outcome.

Tomorrow is your Bow time! Tomorrow is your time to stand tall, to stand brave and to stand as one! Tomorrow you will have the conditions to suit your strengths and as in 1815 you will have support on both flanks! As with Wellington and his Green Jackets, you will have your Green Army.

“So here we are once more but not yet in the playground of the broken hearted. We have been losing on the swings and losing on the roundabouts! It may have been too much too soon, too far to go but it’s not too late to play and the game is never over. Rugger is the tops, a game for men they say but this is no Garden Party.”

3 games to play. 3 games to win....and they start tomorrow. Defeat and the end is upon us. Win and then we are one step closer to salvation. We are a proud club and this has been a difficult year however, it is NOT over, it is NOT over unless you let it be! Yes, the future of this club is in your hands. Whether or not we play National League rugby next year starts with you tomorrow. Read this and believe that all of us who are a part of Billingham Rugby Club are 100% behind you. However read this and believe that only you can make it happen. 12 months ago we needed to win to become champions. This is more important than last year. Last year is history; well done but move on and get over it. Tomorrow is about how far you have progressed.

Tomorrow is about our future. If this weighs heavy on you tonight... good, it should. That is the price of success, the price of being good at what you do, the price of carrying the dreams of a community on your shoulders. Let it weigh heavy, let it motivate you and let it galvanise you into an unstoppable force.

To the Green Army; we need you. Your team needs you! Your club and its future needs you. It’s our last home game of the season and it is a MUST win game! Come wearing your colours with pride. It's not over until...

But she is definitely starting to gargle. Yes, we were beaten at the weekend by Rossendale. A slow start and a good finish but not good enough. It is starting to look grim and nothing short of a miracle will help us now. Having said that, that's exactly what the Duke of Wellington said when facing Napoleon at what was the turning point of what some would say was our future. Yes the Iron Duke's turning point was Waterloo, will ours? Miracles can happen we just need to believe and hope lady luck is with us. Luck tends to fortune the brave and we need to show we deserve her fortunes. We need to be brave and to stand tall and strong. Win or lose it is time for our battle. Are you ready?
As for the rest of the club. The 2nds had a very good win away at Stockton: 47 : 6. How times have changed. It was only a couple of years ago we were playing their 3rds. With 7 tries and 6 conversions the 2nds are finishing strong. Their last game is at home this weekend to Blaydon. A bit of a competition going on to see who will finish as top try scorer. At the moment Josh is on 8, Zammo on 6, Alick on 5 and Pottsy and Andy Winspear on 4 each. Now if you are thinking, is that junior os senior Potts, then obviously its junior aka Jordan. However Steve was dragged out of retirement at the weekend and did go over to score, so maybe he is also in with a chance!! Good luck lads and well done on a great season.
I have no news of the 3rds - sorry. As for the Colts, they had one of their best wins of the season against Wigton, last years league winners. Winning 32:20 with a limited squad due to the fact that the U17s had their cup final on Sunday. So the 3rd of our finalists had their final against local rivals Horden and .... yes won! Bringing home our first County Cup of the season at the 3rd time of asking. They won their match 38:7. Well done lads. In other news the U13s won their semi-final making them the 5th of our junior teams to reach a final along with the 15s, 16s, 17s and 18s. We now have 2 more chances of silverware with the 13s and 18s playing in a couple of weeks - unfortunately on the same day again.
But not to be outdone, our mini section got amongst the action, getting through to the final of the U10s without conceding a try. Unfortunately they were beaten in the final by Mowden 2 tries to 1. Still that makes 6 county finalists!!
Big, sorry I mean BIG weekend ahead. 3 teams at home on Saturday, last home game for the 1sts, last game of the season for the 2nds. Come along and support your club. That was the week that was..

Looks like someone didn’t read the script!

I would like to open by extending a huge congratulations to the U15s and U16s for last Sunday. I know both sides were defeated in the Cup Final, but let’s not forget what an achievement getting there was in the first place. Both teams won their respective cup finals last year and to go on and reach consecutive finals is one hell of an achievement. Added to that both sides were without regular key players due to commitments at representative level but this did not stop each side going down without a fight. On behalf of Billingham Rugby Club congratulations to West Hartlepool who won the U15s and to Darlington who won the U16s Cups. Enjoy the cup – we are out to win it back next year.

Now I turn to the seniors. 2nd XV first away to Middlesbrough...again. Looks like Middlesbrough don’t quite get the spirit of rugby. We were looking for a friendly but let’s be honest we were only there 3 weeks ago. A return match at ours would have been par. Anyway, not that I’m bitter it was a game that we should have won and up until the very last play we were.... but we let them cross the line in the very last play and lost 33:27. One player from Saturday, Tom Kill went from Billingham 2nds to Newcastle Falcons 2nds in 2 days. Well done Tom on your debut for the A team on Monday.

The success of the weekend and at the moment looking like of the season are the 3rds. Again they went away and beat Wensleydale 1sts by (I believe) 61:19. Another win and still unbeaten in the league this year. Well done to Mick and the lads.

As for the 1^st XV, I don’t really have much to say about the game as I wasn’t there but by all accounts neither was half of the 1^st XV team. I don’t usually criticise the players but there comes a time when it’s time to stand up and be counted or move over and let someone who wants to be there, someone who wants to put their body on the line, someone who wants it more than anything else to have a go. Before Saturday we had 5 games and pretty much needed to won 4 of them with Beverley being one of them. Well that’s now gone which leaves 4 games left, 4 must win games left, 4 games to provide to everyone else and to yourselves that you deserve to be in this league. We have one home game left – Waterloo. We need the Green Army back louder than ever, bigger than ever and willing you on to victory more than ever. But in addition to them, we need you! Yes you; our 1^st XV, not 1 or 2 of you, not 6 or 7 of you but all 18 of you to stand up. It’s your time to be counted. Your time to be that Green Army. Your time to win and it starts on Saturday away to Rossendale. If we win and the other teams around us who are playing tough games lose – we are back in it. Roll over and you aren’t the players you once were. You have proven you can beat anyone in this league. It’s not about belief or confidence or anything else other than – do YOU WANT IT!

To be or not to be..

To be or not to be.....that is the question! But to be what is the question within the question. To be true to you passion and your club or to sleep. For to sleep is to die! Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing end them.

Following a great victory against Sandal last week we have put behind us our bad luck, we have adapted to a professional league, we have adjusted to a higher level of rugby and we have dealt with a thin squad with injuries throughout the season. We have come of age. But and it’s a big but, for all we have achieved we have achieved nothing.

Before I go on I want to highlight where we are. We are 5th from bottom but we are still amongst it. The Lions have stepped up to the Candy League A division this year but we are still second from bottom. The 3rds are un beaten in the league and still 3^rd from top behind teams who have played less games through cancellations! We have the U18s, U17s, U16s and the U15s in County Cup Finals but no winners....yet! We are so close to this being one of, if not the best season in the clubs history but as of now we have nothing.

To sleep or die... NO! We oppose them and end them. For now is our time, now is the time for the spirit to show strength, now is our chance as a whole club to stand together; youth to 1^st XV.

Our vision hasn’t changed since I became Chairman; to be the leading family rugby club in the North. Our vision is about to be fulfilled. Our vision is backed up by a plan which has goals and objectives. I recently announced we are to enter into the second phase of our development plan. The foundation of this is our achievements in rugby; on and off the field. Over the next few weeks that foundation, our future, your future will be determined by where we finish.

I, we, even you need you to stand together in your numbers and support the club. Sunday 1pm you have a choice; U16s v Darlington at West in the final or U15s v West at Stockton in the final. Go in your numbers and give your support. It’s unfortunate they are both played at the same time but let’s give them both our support. If you usually only come and watch on a Saturday then come and see the future of the club.

Saturday 1sts and 3rds are away. The 2nds are away also but only at Middlesbrough so again, show your support. Pick a match and come and enjoy some rugby.

If you can travel to Beverley tomorrow, then thank you. We have 5 games to go. How important is tomorrow, well Beverley are 1 point behind us 3^rd, from bottom and in the relegation zone. Lose and we could swap places. Win and we could put a gap between us that would take us one step closer to avoiding the drop. Next week away to Rossendale who are 4^th from the top; another tough one. And then it s the biggy, our Waterloo. They currently have the same points as us; another must win game. Then we finish off with 2 away fixtures. Away to Stockport (currently top) and away to Lymm 5 points ahead of us. So we have to win them all but if we were to win tomorrow, beat Waterloo and Lymm and one of the two others it might be enough! A tough ask but one to which we have shown we can rise too.

My question to you is will you rise to match it. We have one more match left at home; Watelroo 9^th April. If you can’t make away matches then please...... please be there for the last home match of the season. This is the time to get your aunties and uncles out, you nanas and your grandads. Put on your colours and show your support. Just as I expect many members of the club will be following the juniors over the coming weeks in their cup finals I expect those junior players to be support your senior side as they fight to ensure you play at the highest level next year and beyond.

We are so close and yet we are so far. We can taste the success and the relief but we need to be their together. Don’t say, it’s just another game. It’s not. Each match for each team between now and the end of the season will shape our future. I will be a part of that future. Will you?

One Year on.....

Come the day and come the hour, come the power and the glory!

I posted the above on the 27^th March 2010. We had 4 games to go; we had to win them all to win the league and guarantee promotion. How time flies but the sentiment is no different. Two weeks before the above I mentioned we had 6 games to go – win them all and take the glory. This year we have 6 games to go – win them all and secure our place in National League 3. We have to play 2 games at home and 4 away but we play the 4 teams that are directly above us today. It’s not totally in our hands at the moment but if we win, win and win again we can take control of our own future. The season will go on long after our games have been played; we need to be secure by then.

The post I made on the 27^th March was the day we had to play Sandal who had already beaten us earlier in the season. Again 12 months on and we are in the same place. Do you remember the result from last year, I do 25:9 to Billingham. Today, 18 men go back into battle. We have 6 of them to fight, 6 of them to win and then the glory once more will be ours. Winning the double 3 years ago was special! Winning the league last year was also special! Staying in this league, playing at a level we have never played at before and after a poor start showing the league what we can offer will be special. If you want and added incentive, it looks like West will be in this league next year. So young men to you we leave the honour and to us, deliver the glory!

Today also sees the first Chairman’s lunch. I am delighted to have joining me today the coaches and managers from the youth section and many volunteers that have helped throughout the season. Someone once told me; “if you are going to be a bear... be a grizzly!” Well not only have I arranged a lunch for you today to say thanks for all your hard effort, but I have put on a must win match against Sandal, a second team Candy game against Mowden – one the lads want to avenge after 2 away defeats this season already, one in the league and last week in the cup in a very close semi final but in addition I have arranged for the England v Ireland match to be put back until 5pm so you don’t have to miss a minute!

About 15 years ago we had a vision; that vision became a reality when we were awarded our Lottery Grant and the outcome is the Billingham Rugby Club of today. That reality is U13s through to U18s in cup semis or finals. Its County honours at every age group including seniors. Its players representing Billingham with England shirts. Its a National League side built upon the foundations of our youth academy. Its senior sides playing and winning at the highest level they can in their respective leagues; the 1sts in National 3, the 2nds in the Candy A league and the 3rds the top of the Merit league. What Billingham Rugby Club provides is the opportunity for every player from U7s upwards to become the best they can possibly be. We offer the best coaching, a playing blueprint for success, a safe environment for kids, great facilities and above all a social community. Billingham Rugby Club is unique because we have achieved all of this without compromising our vision and our rugby values; fair play, honesty and above all amateurism. We have achieved all of this with the support of our members, volunteers, sponsors and the community. We would not be where we are today without you all. Our spirit is our strength. Thank you.

Why this message you ask? Because we are about to embark upon the next major phase of our journey. In order to achieve this we need you! We are looking for volunteers to work as part of a group(s) with specific remits to deliver on the next phase of our development plan. From pitch side barriers to all weather 4G playing pitches. From additional changing rooms to indoor training facilities. From fund raising to raffles. We have a vision and a plan but we need volunteers. Whether you can provide 1 hour per month or 1 hour per week. Whether your skills are in project management or administration. Whether you are a professional, a tradesman or unemployed. Whether you can contribute money, resources or just your time and energy. We need you!

We are looking for volunteers to work on taking Billingham Rugby Club onto the next level. Our goal has not changed: “to be the leading family rugby club in the North” We can’t do it without your help. One battle at a time...

One battle at a time, one game at a time, one point at a time.

A mixed last week, the 1sts losing 19:17 to a late drop goal and the 2nds and 3rds both winning. This weekend we have it all to do again. Our 1sts face Waterloo for the first time this season – away. If we thought Chester was a way to go...try Waterloo. This is a must win match. We are on level points with Middlesbrough and 2 behind Waterloo. A win for us and a defeat for Middlesbrough sees us move out of the relegation zone.

2nds are away to Middlesbrough in the Candy league and the 3rds are our only team at home. I am sure they would love your support.

Sunday sees a busy fixture list with the pick of the day being the U15s in the County Cup semi-final at home. If you are looking for an excuse to get some air on Sunday why not get down and support all the youth teams and in particular the U15s. Did you know the U13s, U14s, u15s and 16s are all in the County Cup semi final at the moment and that the U17s and the U18s are already in the final. Not bad eh. Come and lend them your support.

Oh and don’t forget England v France on Saturday at 5pm and Karaoke on Sunday with Happy Hour.

Top of the world

After beating Middlesbrough then Mowden Park on consecutive weeks that must make us on current form the top team in Teesside? Works for me J

Can you adam and eve it? The 3rds had only their second defeat of the season on Saturday. Unbeaten in the league and only narrowly defeated by Westoe in the cup they played a friendly against Middlesbrough 3rds on Saturday. A step-up in level and even more so with their 1sts not playing (and that’s another story). Interesting though that some of Middlesbrough 3rds were playing for their 1sts against our 1sts only a couple of weeks before. Mmm! It was only a friendly BUT I was hoping for our first clean sweep on Satruday. The Colts having kicked of against Mowden Park in the U18 semi final won their game 13:0. Congratulations to the Colts. Then the 1sts and 2nds both had fantastic wins. The 1sts beating 4^th placed Mowden 24:21 and the 2nds beating Morpeth away 41:5. Great day, great results and let’s hope for that first clean sweep this weekend.

Finally thanks to the County President and Secretary for honouring us last Saturday. I understand that they enjoyed their day, the match but in particular the 3^rd half J

The U11s have not posted their results from the weekend but the U12s had a great win away at West winning 41:7. The U13s were called off due to water logged pitches and the U14s, U15s and U16s don’t seem to be updating their blog – so no details sorry. The minis were all training.

This weekend it’s the 1sts, 2nds and Colts at home on Saturday followed by a Karaoke Disco in until the club from 6pm until 10pm.

It's late, I have had a drink but... We beat Mowden not just once but twice. 13 nil in the semi final of the cup and 24 21 in National 3. So after beating Boro and Mowden who's the best club in Teesside?
Oh 2nds beat Morpeth 41 : 5 too.

Winds of change..

Well one thing is for certain...it’s blood windy.. OMG. I had the pleasure (sarcasm) of landing at Teesside airport last night. It was that bad that even when we were stationary and the engines were off the plan was still swaying a foot either way. Let’s hope that the winds don’t spoil a great weekend of rugby.

I have already mentioned that the Colts and the 1sts are at home tomorrow in a double header with Mowden Park. In addition to welcoming committee members from Mowden we are honoured to have the County President visit too. We shall be hosting lunch before the game for Mowden, the County entourage and of course the Kitten and Pussy Club. I have to say it, I am more than a little disappointed. I think there is none of the original Kittens apart from maybe Keith there tomorrow and no Pussy Cats. A grand total 9 so what does that say?

Anyway lets’ hope we can have another double with a home derby win making that 2 wins on the bounce and 3 in 4 games. Good luck to the Colts and also to the 2nds away at Morpeth. I am not travelling tomorrow lads so good luck. Finally good luck to the 3rds who are also scheduled to be at home. Should be a loud and busy day especially of the 3rds are in Hawaiian shirts – unless that was last weeks or was that just some bad taste J

Looking through the youth blogs, I think the minis are training and the 11s and 12s are at West Hartlepool. Unsure about the 13’s thru to 16’s. The wind doesn’t make for great rugby but it does dry the pitches out. What we need is for it to blow itself out tonight and then the sun come out tomorrow...we can dream. I know it’s been tough lately with pitch availability and we are looking to address this in a number of ways and you will be hearing more form me in the next few weeks.

I would like to use this opportunity to send out an early invitation to all coaches and managers in the Youth Section to attend a Chairmans lunch on Saturday 26^th March as my guest. It’s the re-arranged fixture with Sandal. KO should be back to normal at 15:00 and lunch will commence at 13:00. RSCP by the end of Feb please so we can cater. Any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Yes it’s that time of year. The posters have been up now for several weeks; the match advertised – its Kitten (and Pussy) Club time. Now when you joined the Kitten Club you knew the rules... when the club calls you have to respond. So unless you are working away, in hospital or it’s your anniversary (and that’s still a poor excuse) we need you down at the club to sponsor this weekend’s match.

Why not come down early and watch the Colts play – it’s a double header - with our Colts versus Mowden Park in the Cup followed by the main event. It’s still only £30 per head for a few drinks, some food, great company and the opportunity to sponsor your team.

Please contact Colin and put your name down – we need numbers by Thursday to ensure we can cater properly. Failing that – email me and I will put your name down for you. Out on a Lymm

This was the blog I was going to post....

After the Lord Mayor’s show or........a corner turned. A corner turned of course!! Do you know what the secret of a successful plan is..? First you need to know where you are coming from. Second you need to know where you are going. Third you plot a course and then off you go. Simples eh tsts! The secret however is that you can change your course, take a different route, react to obstacles in front of you and so on... as long as you know where you are going the path may deviate but the result will be the same. Well we know where we are going and having turned the corner of Christmas we are now back on track. Now of course we may hit yet another hurdle tomorrow but I am going to go out on a limb ... and say not. The confidence is back, the belief is back, we are back!

For those not able to take the trip to Lymm tomorrow, we have a feast of rugby for you at home. Yes the Lions are back against Mowden in the Candy League. A couple of comments have been made about the lack of senior results on the website..valid as they are.. still no offers to help! So here’s the deal. If the 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd team managers can email or text to the results to our comms officer or me... we will arrange for them to be updated.

Latest new is 1sts and 2nds are both cancelled due to frozen pitches. However, according to facebook the 3rds now have a game. Confused .com? Me too! Anyway, what I do know is that there is a live match on the box KO 3pm... see you there..because we can’t afford a dead day. So Saxons v Italy at 3pm it is. Can you imagine if I had remembered to send the blog last night when I got in rather drinking a bottle of Savignon Blanc? Talk about being out on a Lymm!

Enough said? ... not at all. Thank you. Thank you to those young men of Billingham, those proud young men who battled hard to bring home the glory, to bring home the bragging rights and to bring home the points. Thanks to each and everyone of you for being there in your numbers with your voices and your support. For today we beat our nearest rivals, our local rivals, our derby rivals. Not only did we secure 4 points but we won for the second time in 3 weeks. And as they say; 2 out of 3 ain't bad.... but 3 out of 4 is better. Bring on Lymm!!!
Tonight is to the victors! Tonight the glory stays North of the river! Tonight the question is answered? Who is the best team in Teesside? Well we are of course.
Do you know what's even better? I am out in the Boro tonight? So this evening I shall be mainly wearing jeans and a smug smile.

Saturday 22^nd, Greenwood Road 14:15 KO. Billingham v Middlesbrough Where will you be?

It’s a local derby. It’s the first time we have played Middlesbrough in the league at home. They are 10 points ahead of us – this is a massive game. If we win and win well we close on them by 5 points and in all probability go ahead of Waterloo. We lose we drift potentially 15 points away. With Waterloo losing their recent games, including against Rochdale last week and us having to play them twice in the coming weeks our destiny awaits. We will have our battle of Waterloo but this weekend Middlesbrough is our Agincourt; Joe is our King Harry and Billingham is our England!

We need our ‘long bows’ to win this battle. We need you our supporters. We need everyone of you, man, woman and child. We need to muster an army to defend our honour, our pride so we can stand tall in Teesside as the club that deserves its position, as the club that has come far but has far to go, as the club that all else should aspire to be. We need your bodies, your voices, your strength and sense of passion that has helped carry us to where we are today. Cometh the hour, cometh the support. In our hour of need, you will be there.

On Saturday at kick off they will see you stand like greyhounds in the slips, straining from the start. The game’s afoot. Follow your spirit, and upon this charge Cry ‘God for Joe, Billingham and Saint Thonia!!!’

What a difference a game makes!

Well following on from last week’s post, we may not have had many matches but it meant that many club players were able to see our first senior game in over 7 weeks and more importantly only our second win this season. Not only did we beat Rochdale 37:0, we scored a total of 7 tries and secured a 5 point win. Added to this a clean sheet, Chris Hyndman returning we couldn’t have asked for much more. Well we could have, we could have asked for all 6 teams above us to lose.....guess what....they did. Waterloo one place above us lost by 7 and that 1 point puts us on level pegging with them with 17 points and now we are only 6 points behind the team above. We have some big games coming up which we need to win but most of all we need to use last week’s performance to build confidence and momentum. We need to follow that up this weekend and start to believe we can do this week in and week out.

The best part for me last week was standing in the bar afterwards and listening to people criticise this and criticise that. Fantastic! That’s what sport is all about. Everyone has their own opinion, everyone sees the game through a different set of eyes and everyone has the right to voice them and after 7 weeks of nothing it was wonderful to here all the chatter and the views. Even better when we win so well and there is still room for improvement. We also have to remind ourselves that we are still a young team; Will 19, Peter 20, Anth 21 (the day before), Screeny 22; there is still a lot to come and let’s hope we can do that at this level by getting back to winning ways.

It’s good to see that we have a full fixtures list again this weekend to good luck to all 3 teams. Unfortunately I can’t be there this weekend but I have got some little gifts for Craig and Paul as like all children they like it when they gets presents from abroad!

On a final note, I know we have just had Christmas and I know it was cold, but the turn out for last week’s home game was a little poor. I get a proud feeling when I travel to away matches in the fact that we have a relatively good following compared to others. Well that wasn’t the case last week. However, I am calling on you now to make the week after next, the 22^nd a ‘green flag’ day. Put on your green shirts, scarves, hats or whatever and come on down and bring your support. It’s a derby match. We host Middlesbrough and we need to show them that not only are we capable of competing at this level on the field but our support is proud, loud and strong! Enjoy Penrith but make a date for Middlesbrough! Keep on ruckin.

Bleak...Mid.....Winter brrrrrr!

Talk about the bleak mid-winter. Forget ‘bleak’ I am more concerned about ‘mid’! I hope that our winter is well and truly not mid but over! No rugby for 7 weeks, snow deeper than your boots, cold, wet and miserable... but hang onto your hats....its back.. well in a fashion.

First of all I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you, our members, friends of Billingham rugby club and visitors to this blog a Happy New Year and a safe and healthy 2011.

There’s much to talk about and I usually spend some time at this time of year reflecting upon the year we have left behind. But, we don’t want to do that!! We reflected on the previous season at the end of the season. The first half of this season has not been that memorable and in many ways we have a new year ahead and a new opportunity; so lets’ not look back but forward.

Tomorrow at 2:15 in the afternoon (weather permitting) we are at home to Rochdale in the league – our fist senior match in 7 weeks. We are a few players still out with injuries but we have had effectively a pre-season to regroup, build on our fitness, our game and our belief. I expect that tomorrow we will see the Billingham of old. One man doesn’t make a team but one man can have an influence on a team and can be that extra 5% that gives us that 5 point win rather than a 2 point defeat. We have been so close leading up to the enforced break but close isn’t good enough. Rochdale is a must win match for us. We have the players, the team and the belief. Win tomorrow, Waterloo lose to 4^th place Rossendale and we move up the league. Maybe only one place but the way to get away from our predicament is one game at a time, one win at a time and it starts tomorrow. Check the team sheet... there’s a surprise!

Now unfortunately the 2nds, 3rds and Colts have all had cry offs. No rugby for 7 or 8 weeks and now cry offs. What the hell is up with the world. Having said that that should mean a bumper crowd tomorrow. Where will you be come 2 o’clock. I know where I will be. It’s a New Year. Its a fresh start. It’s an opportunity to come and wish everyone the best for the year ahead and support your team. I don’t care if you want to wear your Christmas jumper or your new ‘England’ shirt anta left you, just bring your Billingham voice and your Billingham support.

On Sunday we should have full fixtures for the Youth section. I can’t confirm who and where because we have a new format for the Youth Section. They each now have their own page/blog.. but I can’t see where the Youth announcement will go.. I will come back to you on that one. Anyway to celebrate the fact that rugby is back.. your Sunday Full English is back to. Yes you can a full English down at the club from 9:15. So parents, why not bring down the kids (get a paper on the way) have a full English, a nice coffee and enjoy your morning in the relaxing environment of the club then watch them play – we have settees you know! J

Bloody weather

Yep it’s doing my head in... No rugby for 4 matches – that means it will be 7 weeks since our last game when we play our next match. This is when it’s tough for a rugby club. We need games to keep players of all ages – 6 through to 40+ - playing and interested. Without the games we lose players; they get frustrated, they find other activities or they just get out of the routine. Without players, the club struggles financially and then we just end up in a vicious cycle.

So in order to break it and as we are coming up on Christmas, as I remember it last year the snow didn’t stop us!! So this is my call to all coaches, managers, hangers-on, parents, committee members, supporters. Boxing Day is hereby renamed Rugby Day. When we start with the U7s playing Dad’s v Lads going right through to Senior Old Boys versus the Young Guns (with Dads versus lads again J) for the Dave Blake Memorial Trophy. We can’t help the weather but we can help ourselves so make sure we are down in force this Boxing Day.

This year we have the return of the Boxing Day (Rugby Day!) Raffle. Have you got your tickets? It’s going to be a good old day, plenty of rugby, plenty of banter, plenty of fun and singing. See you there!

Google the above phrase and you will get the above answers in the top 3 responses! So what can we take from these adverse weather conditions we are encountering? On the upside; injuries get time to heal, bodies get to rest, Christmas shopping gets done. On the downside rugby is not being played, fitness levels go down, comradeship is missed, boredom sets in and the club starts to struggle.

But do not fear because we have a solution... from adversity comes innovation (5^th on the list ) and as we all know, innovation creates opportunity (I made that up..). So in order to stop you from getting bored, in order to stop you from missing your comrades, in order to stop you from becoming unfit (or in some cases more unfit), in order to keep rugby at the centre of our mind, in order to stop the club from struggling.... and last but not least to stop you from spending too much money on Christmas presents... the club has put on a Festive Festival of Rugby... just for you!

This Saturday we have arranged from some team building (training) followed by an abundance, one could even say a plethora or possibly a festival of rugby with 4 back to back Heineken cup games. To make it festive there will be competitions, raffle prizes and most importantly a Festive fayre of a Christmas dinner followed by a festival cheeseboard. Team captains will be contacting players. With 8-10 seats per table we want 2 from each of the 1sts, 2nds, 3rds and Colts. We also want as many others as we can get on the day. The cost for this Festive, Festival of Rugby, Comradeship and frolics would usually be £7.50. But as a special offer and in recognition of your support to the club this once in a lifetime offer is available for only £5 and I will even through in a free raffle ticket to everyone who buys lunch.

Yes this weekend is the Billingham Rugby Club Inaugural Christmas Fayre. Lunch will be after training at approx 2pm. You would have only spent it on food anyway. Everyone’s a winner. See you there.

I am not wearing a hat! I don’t have a moustache (even though it is Movember)! But I am pointing at you! Yes you! And You! And even you over there skulking away!

We are Billingham Rugby Club! YOU are Billingham Rugby Club! Together we have a long history and a proud history. We have been out in the wilderness in the past and come back; come back with a vengeance and all thanks to the support of people like you who carried us through those dark times.

This season has not gone according to plan. As it stands today we have players injured, players playing out of position, players out of form and lacking in confidence and players struggling just to get another win; maybe even trying too hard at times. This is a tough league. For now... we have reached our level. North 1 is not our level – we proved that last year; we are better than that. National 3 is our level – we just haven’t adapted to it yet but we will and we will with your support. I went to B&B last week and it was not a good day. I wasn’t on the coach on the way back but I can’t imagine it was a great atmosphere. The lads know they didn’t perform. The lads know they need to do better. The lads know it starts tomorrow.

The two previous games were an indication of the way things were going. Much improved against Mowden and Chester. B&B were a strong quality side; filled with ex-premiership players but no excuses; we didn’t play well. Was it anything to do with the fact that the team had just found out that Chris is probably out for the season? We may never know. What we do know is that the next three weeks are massive games and you can play a vital role. Two home games against strong sides and then away to Waterloo – just above us. We need to take points from the next two to put pressure on the teams around us and Waterloo. Your role – easy.

Put on your club shirts, wrap up in your green hats and scarves. Bring your friends and bring your family. Bring the kids and grandparents. For the next 2 weeks all U16s will be free of charge. So if you play for Billingham Rugby Club on a Sunday (and there are over 200 of you) come and lend your support – we need you, your club needs you. I have heard comments such as “I am not paying £4 to watch that...” It’s your money and it’s your choice. But let me put it in perspective. We played against B&B last week – it was £6 per head to get in. We charge the lowest entry fee in the league and..... our 1^st XV players PAY about the same to play (£3.50)! If you here different and I have had comments thrown at me such as “the club put’s all it’s money into the 1^st XV...!” Let me point out once and for all – we are an amateur club with amateur players who pay match fees to play against professionals and semi-professionals.

Come and join us and come and get behind the team. Lend them your voices and your support. For now is not the time to walk away. Now is not the time to lose the faith. Now is the time to show the world we are the best Family Club in the North. Now is the time to show your passion for this club and this town. Let the lads know we are behind them all the way and lets cheer them over that line; time and time again! Come on Billingham.

Every cloud has a silver lining... and I am delighted that we are in receipt of our first silverware of the season. After last season’s record year across the club it was always going to be a hard act to follow. However, there is no better place to start than at the beginning and our new team, the U7s were Plate Winners at Sunderland’s Tag Tournament on the 17^th October. They only have a small squad of 4-5 players at the moment but with this being their first competitive match – it bodes well for the future. Having lost their first match and drawing their others in the group stages they found themselves in the Plate semi against Middlesbrough – a side with a large squad to choose from. The game was drawn 4 each and went into sudden death. Cometh the hour.. cometh young Alex Schiller (sound familiar?). Running from deep in his own half he scored the try to see Billingham through to the final against Westoe. In the final it was all about great defence and strong running again from Alex Schiller. Well done lads and congratulations to Alex, Taylor Morrison, Ruben Simpson and Cameron McDonald as well as a guest appearance from Lewis Mallam.

The thirds lost in the 3^rd team cup last week to Westoe. Their first defeat of the season but a credible performance against a strong side. They take a well deserved rest this week.

The seconds had their rest last week and this week play Stockton in the 2^nd team cup J There is nothing like a derby match and there is nothing like a derby cup match. Good luck this weekend lads and no I’m not playing this weekend – it’s Josh and Armo!

Jack of all trades or a Harvest Brunch

A friend once told me that if something has more than purpose then it typically misses out on both. If something is clearly designed with a single purpose in mind it usually succeeds. This can be applied to many things. We have all heard of the phrase “Jack of all trades...master of none!”. ‘Multi-purpose’ tools are well... multi-purpose but you still reach for the right tool for the right job when you need it. Even a player can be multipurpose; he can play here, there, almost everywhere but often finds himself on the bench.

Well the same can be applied to a communication. When a communication contains many points then quite often some or even all of the points can be lost. So I would just like to take a moment to re-advertise the Harvest Brunch.

The Brunch which will hopefully be the first of many and is an opportunity for us all, as a club to get together socially and support our team. They have had a tough time of later and it would be great to not only come out in numbers to support them on the field but to get together before the match and have a good old community bash. The idea is we meet at 12:30 (earlier of you wish) and from 12:45 we will serve a hearty English lunch followed by either dessert or a Cheeseboard. We are selling tables of 8 for either £120 or £150 including wine. If you want a table then please order with me or Colin G. If you are only 2 or even 1, call your mates up and get together to order a table. The idea is that by selling tables and not seats we bring the community together. The table cost includes entrance to the match for all 8 of you so offering great value for a good day out whilst also supporting your club.

Maybe a few of you Kittens out there could get together and buy a table. Maybe a few of you who played together in the past could buy say a ’95-96’ table. Maybe the wives and girlfriends could get together and buy a table. What about the ex-scrum-halves; there are enough of us! What about say ‘Mini Parents’ or the ‘Uxx Parents’. Maybe even some of our regular players parents could get together and get a table. If any of our sponsors are out there listening then what about you coming down?

We only have a few events in the year when the whole club comes together; Bonfire Night, Carol Singing, Boxing Day, Summer Fun Day and the end of Season Dinner. My hope is that the Harvest Brunch becomes another date in our Billingham Rugby Club Social calendar. This time we have visitors coming all the way from Birkenhead and it would be great to show them what a well supported family club we are. So make those call! Get together with a few mates! Fireworks, Brunches and the House of the Rising Sun

Well things didn’t go quite according to plan last week did they? The margins between winning and losing can be fine...20:19 up with 10 minutes to go... losing 16:12 when a couple of kicks could have won the game... You can spend forever looking at IFs, BUTs and MAYBEs but in the end we are where we are. The fact that the margins are fine mean we are close. A couple of games go our way and then things can change dramatically. They say winning or losing can become habit forming... well if it’s true it’s about mentality and approach. When you are striving hard for a much needed win and you are in touching distance it’s easy to push hard to secure it, it’s easy to force the game to put it beyond doubt, it’s easy to play the way we know we can play. What may not be as easy is to contain, to slow down or to even choose.. let’s not forget we are playing against good opposition! Opposition that is as fit as we are, are as drilled as we are and are often bigger than we are. Does this mean we are playing at a level to high.. not at all. It means we are learning. Unfortunately you don’t get much time to learn at this level but we will and we will be better for it and we will recover.

Looking wider look at where we are. We are competing at level 5, we have the Lions in mid table in Division 1 of the Candy League (last year many said we should not have entered that league!) and we have a 3^rd team that is unbeaten. Level 5 and Candy league rugby is intense but maybe there is something we can learn from Mick Sudron and his 3^rd team. I am not saying that we should start wearing Tu-Tus or Wigs or even Swim Wear but I am saying that maybe we can enjoy it more. I have seen some stirring 1^st and 2^nd team games this year; they may not have ended in a win but they have been played with commitment and with a smile on our face. We need to put that smile back on our face, we need to play as one and we need to start enjoying it again.

This week gives the 1sts a rest – much needed some would say. The Lions however get there rest next week and tomorrow take on the current only unbeaten team in the Candy League – West Stags. We know its going to be hard, we know they will be looking to prove a point (they always are) and we know we will have to be at our best. But you know something, the Lions have been playing with a smile on their face of late and enjoying their rugby. They have played some tough opposition and have not won many but have made very match a contest. Tomorrow I expect no different. There is a great mix of experience and youth in the side (4 of last years colts will be starting) and the combination is working well. They welcome Jonny back tomorrow from 2 weeks off shore and his leadership on the field brings an element of calm to the team. I will be there tomorrow cheering the lads on. I am going to take the England match so anyone looking to watch a live game tomorrow then either come to Hartlepool to watch the Lions or go to Seaton to watch the 3rds. There is no home game so lets support the lads and then come back watch the England game and support the club.

Talking of support...tonight is the night. It’s the one night in the calendar where the community comes together. It’s when all the wider community and the club come to share a night of music, fireworks, beer, wine and food. What more can anyone ask for... okay clear weather. The forecast is some showers this evening and clear sky by 7pm... let’s hope the Met office know what they are doing. I will be there and look forward to seeing you all tonight.

HARVEST BRUNCH - Now many of you may have noticed on match days recently that there have been some tables set for lunch in the main room. Well I am pleased to announce that on Saturday 20^th we will be hosting a Harvest Lunch. We will be setting tables of 8 and they will cost either £120 or £150 including wine (for the whole table!). So you need to get yourselves into groups of 8 with your friends and contact me, Budgie, Keith or Colin G and reserve your table. What do you get; well you get a mention in the programme; you get a beautiful harvest lunch, free entry to the game, wine if you take option B and the satisfaction of supporting your club! Notices will be going up in the club, on the website and in the Lion. Treat your family! Kids treat your parents (they will pay J )! It’s a bit different, it’s an opportunity to dress up a little and well it’s just good to get together and have some fun. I can already see a Ladies table or two, a couple of regular large families with tables, an ex-players table, several youth tables and then of course we will have the visitors tables too. You never know if its a success then we have some more!

Still away and unable to post properly. Don't have much by way of updates from last week except the results.
1sts lost in what appears from afar to have been a close match. The seconds were beaten away but the 3rds kept their unbeaten run going with another win. No news from the colts ... sorry.
Good luck to all teams today in what looks like three hard matches. Lady luck must be due to play for us but Chester will be a tough one.
Normal service will be resumed next week - looking forward to it!

Away day

Well I am sorry to say I am away this weekend and so will miss out on all matches.

After last week I have realised that you can’t actually watch two matches simultaneously – I know this sounds obvious but this didn’t stop me trying. I positioned myself, camera at the ready, between the 1^st XV and the 2^nd XV game last week. Having missed many of the 1^st XV games due to watching my son play in the 2nds I was looking forward to seeing the lads at last. Unfortunately as most will now be aware we struggled against a solid Lymm side and most of the tries for Lymm came in the 1^st half and were scored away from where I was positioned. What I can say, was once the 2nds finished I watched the end of the 1sts and although the game looked beyond us at the time we showed some true spirit and scored a couple of great tries and given 10 minutes more – who knows? Now I have always refrained from commenting upon selection but I thought we looked a far sharper team for the last 20 minutes or so with Joe back at 10 and Peter with his pace at outside centre. Good to see that the selection has this as the starting line-up this week. The other person who made a difference when he came on was young Paul Burgum who was involved in both the tries. Again great to see him in the starting line up this week. Mowden won’t be easy but if we can take last week’s finishing form into the match I can smell a W!!

Now as for the 2^nds! Fantastic. A great result winning 29:26 against Westoe 2nds in a very old fashioned ‘ding-dong’ of a match. We went ahead twice and then got pegged back before eventually putting the game beyond their reach – although 3 points difference with 10 minutes to go made it a very tense affair. Great rugby played by both sides and a very proud father (me) watched his son play his best senior game of rugby and get his first senior man of the match scoring a try and a total of 14 points – who says he can’t play outside-centre. The reason I am even mentioning him in my blog (apart from him being my son) is that a great day was spoiled by some senseless lout who decided to assault him later on that night in town. Cowardly hitting him from the blind side, unprovoked and whil he was drinking from a bottle; fracturing 4 teeth, damaging his mouth and.....making him unavailable this week!! Anyhow he should be back in a couple of weeks. Good to see Brett back from injury this week and the way the 2nds are playing I would be mightily disappointed of we did not continue our form from the previous 3 weeks into this weeks game against Middlesbrough.

Now as for the 3rds??? What can I say....outstanding. Another fantastic win away to Yarm IIs. And with Tu-tu’s too. That makes it 6 from 6 and long may it last. Wigs this week? Cant wait till they put the whole ensemble together! Good going guys and good luck against Acklam.

The Colts are also home to day and have a strong looking side out against Alnwick. Good luck guys and after the last games beating Northern you may hold the final play for a 4 W Saturday.

It’s that time again.. Friday night.. the eve of match day 7. Now some think that 7 is a lucky number but has luck gone anything to do with it? Yes and no. They say you make your own luck but we all know that luck can either be with you or against you. It’s about time that we had some but it’s time that we made some for ourselves too. Time may change things but unfortunately we can’t trace time.

I was in the club the Saturday before last after the Penrith game. I had been up to Blaydon with the 2nds but came back and spent a couple of hours (well maybe a few more) in the snug. The atmosphere was surprisingly upbeat. Now admittedly we were wetting a couple of babies heads but all in all there was a positive attitude despite the defeat. A realisation that actually we can still play well and no, we haven’t ‘lost it’. By all accounts it was a great game of rugby despite the defeat. However, I was back in the bar for an hour last Saturday, again I had been away with the 2nds but I could not believe the difference. It was flat it .. it was quiet... it seemed the taste was no longer so sweet.

The 2nds also suffered back to back defeats but the outcome has been completely different. They lost to Blaydon by 54 pints to 24. The difference flattered Blaydon but the positives are that the Lions scored 4 tries, reduced the score from last year’s 100 points and came away with a bonus point. More importantly they were showing marked improvements. Last week away at Tynedale (no easy games in the Candy League either) and again a defeat but only by the slimmest of margin; 14 points to 7. Again a bonus point and against last year’s league winners. Officially both of these matches were categorised as Level 6 matches. They have shown improvements each week and a growing belief and confidence which they take in to this weekend’s match at home to Westoe.

The 3rds just keep on with their winning streak and I they are now 5 for 5. Interestingly they went to Thirsk last week in Polo Shirts and Bow Ties but that can’t have gone down well as this week they travel in Tu-Tus!! Big well done to Mick and the lads.

The Colts also had a good win last week although the I don’t have much details except the won 47:12.

So onto this weekend. Strange fascination is fascinating me. Changes are taking the pace. It looks like the performances of the 1sts and the 2nds have lead to some changes for this weekend. With James Screen and Anthony Rumis starting for the 1sts and Paul Burgum on the bench. All on the back of some great performances in recent weeks. Well done guys and good luck tomorrow. So as they try to make change they are quite aware of what we’re going through.

So let’s hope that these changes bring some luck to both the 1sts and the 2nds tomorrow. Let’s home that these changes help us to turn and face the strangers. Let’s get down in our numbers all of us; our season ticket holders, our regulars, our new member and even look out you rock ‘n rollers. Remember pretty soon we are going to get a little older and time may change me but just maybe the changes can change our luck.

‘cos two out of three ain’t bad! (you’ll be singing it all night now J )

Yeehaa! First win of the season! First win in National League 3! First of all... well done to the lads that pulled it off. I know it’s been a tough start; injuries, decisions, performance, etc... however we said we were going to win and we did. However it wasn’t for the fainthearted..10 nil down but coming through to win 21 :17. Great result guys and let’s use it as a springboard.

I had hoped for 4 Ws last week but only got 2. The Colts were beaten away at Carlisle which we know from experience is a tough place to go to. Anyway they have to come to Greenwood Road yet.

The 2nds didn’t even play! Now as everyone knows... it doesn’t take much for me to get my soap box out but ******** me, what’s that all about. It’s a league game!! They managed to put out a third team...oh and a colts side. Now without doing a disservice to Northern, this does show that it can be difficult sometimes when you have injuries. However, I doubt they would cancel a 1^st XV match to play a 2^nd XV match. So why cancel a 2^nd XV match for a 3^rd XV match. Is it because the 3rds were playing Novos? Anyway to bring this to a conclusion, Northern have just called off against our Colts this weekend – it looks like Horden will benefit as I suspect the Colts will be bolstering their 2nds for Northern tomorrow. Maybe they just don’t like travelling!! Oh.. here’s an interesting fact.. they claim to be the Newcastle Upon Tyne’s leading Amateur Rugby Club...... maybe because they never leave the city area! It certainly doesn’t seem professional. I’m sure I will upset some people but tow cancel against us twice in 7 days.. it a tad rude!

Anyway on to the final W...drum roll please... our 3^rd XV beat Redcar 53:nil. More importantly it’s their 3^rd win in a row and that’s a record. Its’ also an unbeaten start to the season and that’s also a record. Come on guys ..give it up for Mick and the lads.

So on to tomorrow. Well we host Penrith and the 2nds are away to Blaydon. I will be travelling with the 2nds and will miss out what will be a great game tomorrow if the rain ever stops. As for the 3rds and the Colts.. I have no idea anymore!!

On a final note, I have been remiss with not mentioning the youth section of late. I get very little in the way of (Lisa you excepted) updates and Budgie manages most of these but I have been down on Sunday, watching, taking photos, refereeing and will provide an update soon.

Anyway, I’m tired of words and I’m too hoarse to shout... but there ain’t no way I am ever gonna leave (poetic licence) you..so don’t be sad, cos two out of three ain’t bad!

Well here we are again; the eve of another exciting weekend!

Billingham travel to bottom of the table Rochdale where a win is essential. Their seems to be a renewed confidence around the club this week and the belief seems to be back. To be honest it’s probably 90% confidence and belief that have been the problem. We know we can play and compete at this level – we just need to turn that believe into deliverables on the field and it has to start tomorrow. Good luck to the lads tomorrow (I know.. I know.. I am not going to be there – Peter, Shep and Shep – SHUT up before you start J) and I am looking forward to our first W of the season.

The Lions are at home to Northern (although the team sheet says Blaydon!!!). Looking at both teams so far this season it should be a close match. 3rds are at Redcar – nice! Good luck to both teams and could we have our first triple W of the season? But wait... we have the colts travelling to Carlisle too. They won their first match last week and will be looking to continue their run. So let’s go for 4W weekend.

Good luck to the juniors on Sunday too. I refereed the U15s last week in a closely fought match. Not sure I was popular with either sides after the game. It appears that I either upset both teams or maybe it’s just that no one wants to talk the referee after the game anymore. Anyway good luck this weekend to the players and refs!

You may have noticed our new curtains and blinds in the main room. Big thanks go out to Vin and his partner (Stewie’s dad) who donated a generous gift towards their funding and to Pauline Shepherd, Carole Ker and a group of others who raised monies towards them. Thanks very much and don’t they look smart!

Disappointed

Disappointed is the only word that comes to mind from the weekend. Yes I was disappointed with the result, we could have and should have won. We didn’t pay to our potential and we didn’t look like we were going to. In parts we were good but too often we weren’t a 15. We didn’t play like a complete team with everyone fighting for each other and we didn’t hold our discipline. Having said all of that what disappointed me more was the support!

Now I know I am going to get flack from many people for what I am about to say – but hey I got it on Saturday and I got it on Sunday so why not get it every day! It will only serve to thicken my already hardening skin.

So why I hear you ask – well where should I start! Okay, let’s start with a definition of ‘fan’ or ‘supporter’.

“A fan, sometimes also called ‘aficionado’ or ‘supporter’, is a person with a liking and enthusiasm for something. They may show their enthusiasm by promoting the object of their interest and attention.”

The focus is on the words liking, enthusiasm and promoting! Now if we actually delve a little deeper into the history; the term ‘supporter’ comes from heraldry and the supporters were (usually) two animals, one either side holding up or supporting the shield with the motto underneath. It’s easy to support a team who win every weekend, what’s that song... “you only sing when you winning...”. Saturday was quiet, yes the team was quiet, yes the team are not performing the way we know they can but the only thing we can do to influence them is to get behind them, is to rally round them, is to support them. I very rarely draw comparisons between football and rugby supporters, but anyone who has been to a top flight ‘soccer’ match, typically a derby match when the team you support concede will know something unreal can happen; the fans just start to sing louder, start to shout louder, start to support louder. They aim to quieten the opposition support, put fear into the opposition players and demonstrate their utmost support and commitment to their players. Our numbers on Saturday were low! Our voices were lower, even silent! Our performance and by ‘our’ I mean we the supporters, was poor. When our team needed us we were not there. I know as a supporter it’s our right to express our views after all we have paid to be there. All I ask of you is be that 16^th man.

I haven’t finished yet either. As a small club we get to sit with the players in the evening, talk to them, have a drink with them; after all they are our family and our friends. But let’s remember a few of things.

1 – they don’t get paid and they do this for the same reasons all of us who played in days gone by did; for the love of the sport

2 – many of them are still young men

3 - many of them haven’t experienced this level of rugby before

4 – many of them have not experienced a run of three defeats before

So when you have a comment about an individual’s performance, especially when you have been drinking all day keep it to yourself please. It’s not clever and it’s not constructive! First of all what good can come of telling a young man “he was crap today”. Secondly are you sure you are qualified to comment. If you were a good player in your own time then you will know if you had anything about you that good leaders know what to say, when to say it and when just to shut up! Do you know what annoys me most? People who criticise, complain, moan BUT... do nothing constructive to make a difference. If you don’t like something, help fix it don’t just moan!

Having said all of that, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and this is mine!

Now by way of contrast take a look at our club house, the perimeter fencing, the entrance area, the flag poles, the video stand and so on. See this is what ‘good supporters’ do. They take a look at something; they make a comment and they offer to put it right. Thanks to Nick Kill who basically wanted us to go into the new season, into a new league, into the unknown but with a clubhouse and grounds to be proud of. Our entrance was woeful, the fencing was pitiful and our first impression was not going to be good to new teams. Well Nick had a plan – some might sat cunning – he got together with Ian Sanderson and looked at options. Then they got the Youth section involved in the form of Budgie, Alan and Lisa. And from there more people got involved and things happened. The front has been landscaped, the Billingham mound has gone, we have a flag pole, new fencing and the metal fence is in the process of being painted. Then we have Dan Hyndman and others who got the posts painted, the fences painted and best of all; little flags on top of our newly painted posts. These are the people and others like them (who I have undoubtedly missed off) who are the real supporters; they are ever present, they are always looking to make improvements and yes they have good ideas but they act upon them. Well done and thank you.

On a slightly different note I would like to extend an apology to the parents of the Colts on Saturday and in particular the parents of Westoe Colts. We have a policy for admission for 1^st XV home matches. We have young people managing the access and we have provided them with a no quibble guidelines for admission; it is not easy for them to make judgement calls when we know people in the past have exploited the situation. This was brought to the attention of committee on Saturday and we have immediately amended our procedures prevent this from re-occurring.

I don’t mean Mmm as in yummy but Mmm as in ‘pensive’, ‘considering’...but not concerned. It’s been a couple of weeks since my last post and a lot has happened. In summary we have lost our first 2 games! One close and one definitely not close. I was at the Stockport game and although it was a great game of rugby to watch for the neutral – it wasn’t one for us to enjoy; well at least the result anyway. It was a game that had lots of discussion points; yellow cards that cost 12 points, yellow cards that should have been red, injuries to key players. Overall and after taking time to reflect on the game, we did okay. ‘Could do better..’ was probably the phrase. Stockport were immensely relieved with their last try and it shows how much it meant to them; as favourites they will be confident and we worried them.

Last week however was a different matter. I was away and had to rely upon text scores coming through... and they weren’t pretty. Reports I have had since outline trying too hard and forcing the game, fitness, missing tackles – in fact all of the things you would not associate with us. I suppose our fitness in recent years has been a key differentiator, but when you are playing against semi-pros then the fitness is going to be a higher level than we have been used to. It also brings into question our strength in depth. In fact you can spend forever worrying, dissecting, evaluating and going Mmm! Or, you can look at the whole league and see that this is going to be a tough league .... for everyone! Results won’t always go the predicted way and there won’t be a runaway winner. We just have to play our game but be aware that the opposition is better and we need to be more mature in out approach,

Anyway, Rossendale. Another new team, another unknown and another chance to gain our first win. I’ll be there, my family will be there and I am looking forward to seeing you all there too. I understand we have two new members since my last post. Congratulations to Michael and Helen on their new baby girl and to AJ and Kirsty on their baby boy. Please see Alan about membership J.

As far as our second team is concerned they have had a good start to the season. They lost their first game to Morpeth by 35 points to 17 but this was a lot less than the 70+ they conceded last year. Last week they beat Horden away 17:15. Well done guys.

I don’t have the 3rds result from last week but the they had a great result the week before against Stockton; winning 23:10 I think. Any way Mick Suddren scored 2 tries or so he tells me.

Saturday 4th September 2010 - the day we made history.

A 15:00 BST on Saturday 4^th September 2010, Billingham Rugby Club will make history. We will be playing National League rugby for the very first time; we will be playing Level 5 rugby for the very first time; we will be playing Stockport for the very first time. And when I say we.....I mean we!!

Just over 2 years ago we were playing in Durham and Northumberland Division 1.

Just over 10 years ago we were getting changed in a hut or in a borrowed changing room across a bridge.

Just over 15 years ago we nearly went out of existence.

Saturday is a special day in our history for all of us because we have all played a part. The 18 men; who take the field on Saturday deserve our support and our applause. They deserve it because they have given everything to get this far. But many people whom I know read this blog were a part of that journey. It’s not for me to mention them all by name; they know who they are and so do you. But it’s not only about the past; recent or otherwise, it’s about today. It’s about our club, your club and everyone who is a part of Billingham Rugby Club. So let’s take a moment and thank our sponsors who keep us going. Let’s thank our supporters for cheering us on match days. Let’s thank the volunteers who make the club what it is and let’s thank the players... the players without whom we would not be celebrating this great day.

Pre-season matches are interesting, but they are nothing like the real thing! Match day 1 is special every season; if it’s at home it’s even more so and if it’s in a new league against new opposition it’s very special. So whether you are playing on Saturday; 1^st XV or not, whether you are supporting; ex-player or not, when you go to bed on Friday, as you lay down just take a moment......... Can you smell the freshly cut grass? Can you smell the still wet paint? Are the lines of the pitches brilliant white? Is the green of the pitch perfect? And can you smell the liniment drifting through the changing room window? Listen carefully and you may just be able to hear the tip and the tap of the boots. The call to arms. You may even be able to ‘taste’ in the air.....the anticipation. Where will you be at 15:00 on Saturday 4^th September. I know where I will be...and if I look tired it’s because I cannot wait! I cannot sleep!

Now imagine you are one of those 18 men. Imagine what they must be feeling when they lay down on Friday night. When Saturday comes all that has gone before will be forgotten. When they cross that white line they will be National League rugby players and you and I will be watching a National League rugby match. You and I will be watching Billingham Rugby Club; your club... our club.. our young men.

I ask of you this...where your shirt with pride, where your heart on your sleeve and have your voice in full cry. For on Saturday BILLINGHAM RUFC come of age!

Spit, polish and swallows

It’s that time of year again, with just over a week to go until the start of the new season. You can smell the cut grass, the wet paint, the linament in the changing rooms..... Everything feels fresh and ready. But are we?

I couple of weeks ago I commented after the Westoe game. I wasn’t there but I heard a lot about it. I commented; it may be only a pre-season friendly but a win is a win! Well I was at the West game and to ensure balance a defeat is still defeat but it wasn’t. It was only a pre-season but it wasn’t just a defeat. It was the worst defeat I have seen in recent years. We have lost matches but the average points difference over the last 4 years has been.......6 points. But it wasn’t just the defeat, or the points difference but the manner. As a spectator it was horrible to watch. I came back of my holiday to watch the match and went away deflated and in a state of shock. I don’t think I have ever seen us play so badly. Well as they say “one swallow does not make a summer... and one defeat does not make a season”. I am sure it will all be put right in time for next week and Rovers will give us a good test of how we have adapted tomorrow.

Season tickets have started selling. We have sold about 12 so far. A few people I expected to purchase one haven’t. Please note, we will not be accepting payment for season tickets on match days. They have to be bought and paid for advance.

Don’t forget the early bird on the Annual Membership subs expires on Tuesday. You bet get your cheque books out and speak with Alan ASAP.

Finally for this week a big thanks to all those who have been helping out down at the club. There has been a project underway spearheaded by Nick Kill with assistance from Ian Sanderson, Lisa Pearson and army of others. I have just got back and have yet to see the fruits of their work but am going along later tonight to play Old Farts tag to take a look. I know there is still some work to do but I have been getting regular updates and all should be completed in time for the first match of the season.

Well it may have only been a pre-season but you can only play what's in front of you. We all know that this season is going to be tough. You can't jump 2 leagues and keep on beating all in front of you so Westoe was always going to be a good test for us to see how far we have come and how the pre-season training has gone. I am sure Westoe will have their view on the game and the result but for me... a win is a win. I couldn't be there through work but I was texted by both of my daughters the game although the first was a few minutes in to inform that we were two tries down already. OMG! OMG! "Well they are a league above; effectively 2 leagues... I was thinking up my excuses already." However I did get a running commentary (glad I bought them unlimited texts) and was delighted to hear it was 17 each at half time but even more so when we eventually won 58 points to .... (unsure of final score but I think it was 39 to Westoe sorry if it was more). Great start guys

Even better news was I understand we started where we left off last year with a decent crowd of about 250 - not bad for a pre-season. It bodes well for the new season ahead.

There is so much going on at the club at the moment I would not do it justice if I put it all down now so as I have some travels next week and then some holiday so will start accelerating my posts leading up to the first match in .... National League 3. Has it sunk in yet???

One thing I can tell you is that following the AGM we have some new appointments and some changes in officers. First up is following Kate's decision to step down last year we have a new Hon. Treasurer – Jill Armstrong. Guess what we talk about of an evening! Jill has been managing the accounts under Kate's supervision over the last year and this appointment is the members formerly ratifying Jill into the role. I am delighted (and relieved) that Kate has agreed to stay on in a less onerous role as Assistant Treasurer and support Jill – as a qualified accountant she ensures everything is done correctly as evidenced by us showing our audited accounts at the AGM less than 3 months after the year end. We also have some new officers to announce. We have a new House Officer – please give it up for Dave Hyndman. Dave will look after the building and ensure that it is maintained and kept spick and span. That does NOT mean Dave does all the work – quite the contrary – Dave needs an army of helpers and doers and trades people. Dave will however co-ordinate and manage the maintenance. Finally we have a new Match Day Coordinator. The MDC has responsible for the smooth running of 1^st XV home match days; this includes gates, security, welcoming our visitors, our sponsors and ensuring that the day runs smoothly So please give it up for Mr Chairman; Colin Wakenshaw – my predecessor. Dave, Colin and Jill welcome on board. We have some other appointments but I will update you next time.

Time is moving on...only 4 weeks until the new season. Can you believe it! It only seems like yesterday that we were playing Rovers on that fantastic day and in a couple of weeks we will be playing them again in our last warm up match before the season starts.

So that means time is running out on a number of fronts – tick tock!

First of all we held the AGM last Sunday. Thanks to the 26 that turned up and got involved – its the same people who come to the AGM you see week in week out supporting the club. I am not saying that everyone that didn’t turn up doesn’t get involved but I am saying there was a lot absent. You know the phrase “if anyone here present has any......or forever hold their peace” well that sort of applies here. Several points were voted on and passed and some announcements were made.

1. Annual memberships remain unchanged for Player, Player Concessions and Non-playing Full Members. This year’s early Bird discount is £5 if paid by the end of August that’s 4 weeks – tick tock!

2. Match fees remain unchanged along with match fee penalties for late Membership payment (October 1^st and after is late) – tick tock!

3. Social Membership is increased to £10. Remember everyone should be a member – if you aren’t a Full Member you need to be a Social Member.

Sponsorship. Thanks to everyone who has been helping out with sponsorship. Deadline closes in two weeks for programme advertising – tick tock! We are also running out of match day sponsorship opportunities. We can offer match day hospitality of different types so get in contact with me or Colin of you want to book a table before they all go – tick tock!

Finally, and after listening to you our members J we are offering season tickets this year. Match day admission is now £4 and there are plans under consideration to increase it further to £5 during the season. However you can buy a season ticket for £40. With a guaranteed 13 matches that works out at just over £3 per ticket – last year’s prices . Also it protects you from any price increases during the season and gives you access to Cup matches too! If you want a Season Ticket – contact me direct. Two conditions – you need to have paid your membership for this season and the offer is only open until the end of September. If we up the prices to £5 and you haven’t taken out a season ticket – you’ll be kicking yourself – tick tock!

Oh and there are only 20 hours to go until “Fund Day II – The Revenge of the Members”. Eh I hear you say? Well tomorrow is our 2^nd annual Fun Day. Get down early and help out if you can – it will be much appreciated. In addition to all the events and stalls that are taking place, an inter-club match and an outdoor bar – there is the opportunity to partake in the dunking stool. Yes there is a schedule of who is there to be dunked. Apparently I am last up at 5pm but why anyone would want to throw things to get me dunked in cold water is beyond me.

We salute you! I think it’s fitting that on the eve of the Billingham Charity Trophy, when volunteers of all shapes and sizes come together it’s fitting that we reflect on those that ‘rocked’ for us throughout last season.

Recently we held the 2^nd End of Season Club Dinner. The evening brought members together from all corners of the club to reflect on what is the most successful season in the history of Billingham Rugby Club – bar NONE!

I started the evening with 4 numbers; 1 9 2 and 4. Most of you will know that 1924 was the year that the club was founded, but that was not the significance of the numbers in my welcome speech. 1 represented the position we finished in North 1. 9 represented the number of pieces of silverware/trophies we won during the season across the whole club. 2 represented the number of promotions we have achieved in the last 4 years. 4, well 4 is the number of promotions we need to play Premiership rugby. J

The evening was a celebration of the whole club. We had representatives from all but 2 teams on the evening – from U7s through to 1^st XV. After a fabulous dinner (interrupted by England playing against the USA – upon reflection that was a waste of time!), we looked back on the achievements by showing three short videos; collection of pictures played to music which covered the mini section, the junior section and the senior section including the colts. You forget how small 6 and 7 year olds are until you see them playing rugby.

We also included an overview of the performance of each team, their achievements and individual honours for those playing representative rugby. From County honours through to England Colleges; from Falcons academy players to Full Senior County Caps, including at one point this season, Durham County 1^st XV fielding 5 of the 15 on the pitch from Billingham Well done to all teams and players.

Inter-dispersed throughout the evening we read out the nominations for the Coach of the Year and the Manager of the Year. In addition we presented 6 individuals with RFU Volunteer certificates for their contribution to Billingham Rugby Club throughout the season. These were: Brenda Johns, Alan Thompson, Lisa Pearson, Jill Armstrong, Daniel Kirby and Judie Adnett.

The evening culminated with 4 awards being presented and the winners were:........

Manager of the Year – Judith McLean

Coach of the Year - Chris Hyndman

JJ Morris Trophy for Volunteer of the Year - Alan Thompson

Gordon Whem Trophy for Team of the Year – 1^st XV collected by Club Captain Joe Evans

Congratulations to all winners and the trophies are on display in the cabinet in the club.

Both the JJ Morris and the Gordon When Trophy’s were awarded for the 1^st time this year. Both JJ and Gordon were long time members of the club, both serving in various capacities, recently departed and still missed. We thank JJ for his kind donation he left the club in his will and we thank Gordon’s family for donating what has to be the most beautiful cup I have ever laid eyes on. We will be arranging for a formal presentation of the trophy in the coming weeks to the team and with the family of Gordon making the presentation.

So as we close one season and look forward to another we have only one more formal event to take place and this is the AGM which will be on Sunday 1^st August at 13:30. Many of you are already involved in pre-season training so are focused on next season already. The fixtures are out – take a look!

I started with a bit of AC/DC so thought I would finish with a bit of Glastingham. Yes tomorrow is the Charity Trophy day and all the fun starts at 10:00. Fun fair rides, live bands, bungee, and not forgetting the Sports Trophy to be fought for. Light showers are forecast early on but let’s hope for a great day. Remember, Charity begins at home and tomorrow it is at our home so let’s support the event enmasse and raise money for a couple of great local causes. So, for those tomorrow giving up their time especially those performing on our very own ‘pyramid’ stage (well not quote a pyramid) We Salute You!

It’s here and in full swing. Twice every 4 years the World Cup comes along; football and rugby and the country gets together. Flags of St. George flying high, people’s moods change and all down to the results of a squad of 20-30 players. I wonder how many of them actually realise the impact they have on the everyday lives of individuals when they decide to not turn up for a game or when someone scores a wonder goal to win. Let’s be honest you wouldn’t want to be French or Italian this week would you? Let’s hope you don’t want to be German on Monday J

Now with the arrival of the World Cup this year, comes pre season training. I haven’t made it down yet due to work commitments but expect to be there for the first time next week. I did go down the club last night later on and there looked to be 50-60 people training. That’s what happens when you get a strong squad of colts coming through and you win the league. Great to see some new faces last night – welcome!

I spent the better part of the evening talking to Colin about the Charity trophy Event next weekend. If you don’t know about it you must have been hibernating for the last 9 months. Week on Sunday, the 4^th July is the Billingham Charity Trophy Day. Started by Paul and Gary Burgum several years ago, it returns to the rugby club since the augural event. It has got bigger each year since then and this years is expected to be bigger than ever with 1000’s of people turning out to support the local community and raise money for this year’s nominated charities. In addition it looks like being a great ‘festival’ day out with activities and a live stage with bands on most of the day all in addition to the main event; and that’s the local sports clubs pitting their strength, skills and guile against each other in a series of sporting activities. Come on down and support the event, the charities and our club.

The news you have all been waiting for is here; yes the new season’s fixture list is in. There was some trouble with the Midlands division which delayed the fixtures for our level (Level 5 in case you didn’t know!) but it’s here. It’s quite scary when you read it; Bradford and Bingley, Waterloo, Birkenhead, Chester. Yes some travelling and some opposition; not forgetting Darlington MP and Middlesbrough. Just like the end of last season when we had a couple of great turn outs for matches against Sandal and Rovers with attendances between 600 and 1000; we will be counting on you again this year. We will be highlighting certain fixtures as ‘Green Days’ and let’s make those days special days with you turning out in your numbers wearing your green and white. It’s going to be a tough season next year and the club and in particular our coach, Chris believes one in which we can play a major part, but as with last year, we can’t do it without you. There will be some obvious matches, Middlesbrough and Mowden at home, but the first one will be the first game of the season and will be against Stockport on the 4^th September. Put it in your diaries NOW! J

A couple of weeks ago we had our end of season dinner where we reflected on the whole club and recognised our volunteers as well as awarding the volunteer, manager and coach of the year. I will be providing a more in depth update on this next week.

Yes I know that the End of Season Dinner coincides with England’s first match in the World Cup – but it’s not real football...it’s soccer. I managed to get the other England (you know the one with the oval ball) to kick off early against Australia so it didn’t interfere with our plans. Anyway I know a number of you are staying away from the end of season dinner on Saturday because of the football. This is a time for the whole club to come together and celebrate our successes and acknowledge those that have helped us achieve what he have. We will be awarding Manager, Coach and Volunteer of the year as well as highlighting the achievements of all teams from U7s to 1^st XV.

For those of you coming to the dinner we will be sitting down for dinner just as England kick off; but the highlights will be on later or you can record it. What you cant record is the celebration of the 2009-2010 season; Billingham’s most successful season to date. Anyway, I look forward to seeing you all on Saturday and if by chance you don’t turn up, or can’t make it – tough – you still owe me the ticket money. J We are expecting plenty of people who haven’t before and I have been asked about dress code; if you want to were black tie do, but No.1s and suits are fine.

End of Season Dinner & Awards

Well we have just under 3 weeks to go!!!

Many will have attended their own teams dinner already but this is your chance to come together as a whole club and reflect on a Great season. Tickets are £15 per head (including dinner) and remember it’s a mixed night; so an opportunity to bring your other half and thank them for their support of you and the club throughout the season.

I have had nominations in already for Manager of the Year and Player of the Year but surprisingly not many for Volunteer of the Year. We will also be recognising other individuals who have contributed to the season.

What I have not had in is much information about the teams. I am hoping from a summary after the Youth AGM but if you want your team to be mentioned and included in the video highlights I need your summary of achievements and some photos! Time is running out.

Finally what I need more than anything else is for you to confirm your attendance to either me, Colin Gibson, Budgie, Lisa or Alan T ASAP ... oh an d with your money. J

The Queen....

Yep, you’ve guessed it...it’s Dinner season. After along and wonderful championship winning season, it’s time for the end of season dinner. Can’t wait! J After the end of the season, then tours..it’s time to reflect on what we have achieved and present the awards to the players who have been the best of the best. Throughout the club all ages have been celebrating their season. We have had dinners across most age groups as they present their player of the season trophies, say thanks to all who have helped and supported them and just enjoy what they have achieved and rightly so.

I was at the Colts dinner last night and had a thoroughly good time.. and can’t wait for this evening. I have spent most of today and previous evenings putting together a video for this evening. I have spent about 16 hours so far and have probably looked at over 1000 photographs and have had to cut them down to a little over 200. One of the benefits of putting the photos together is you get to review first hand every match, each performance. To see the intensity on players faces shows just how much commitment it takes to win a league.

I know it’s been a while since my last post – been busy – so I will give an update after this evening. There is lots happening and lots to talk about but for now...enjoy the dinner and let’s party!!!

But wait no it’s not all over...oh sorry it is...no it’s not..OMG!

I’ll come back to that later. Mixed weekend; combination of after the Lord Mayor’s Show and more of the same.

As most will know by now the 1sts were beaten at the weekend. A combination of injuries and giving some guys an opportunity to start and trying some 2nds out made the game more of a trials or pre-season match than a serious fixture. Did we learn anything? Not for me to judge but strength in depth will be a necessity next season as each game will be a step-up from this year.

The colts had a disappointing trip to Wigton. It was basically a league decider with the winner taking the Colts league. We knew it was going to be a close game as the previous match was an 18 all draw. To cut a long story short the Colts were beaten 18:17. One point between them in 2 matches – good game of rugby, good group of lads and some good banter afterwards. This isn’t sour grapes as I am not saying this had any bearing on the result (and it’s only what I was told so it could be wrong!!), but I was a little (to say the least) surprised to find out after the game that the referee was not a Society referee (as prescribed by the league) but the Wigton Chairman refereeing only his second ever match. The Billingham Chairman was present and was a qualified referee with over 50 matches under his belt but wasn’t asked. I also believe we could have asked for our County to provide a society ref. I know that Dave Swainson refereed Wigton in a cup semi earlier in the month. If only we had been told!

The U13s unfortunately got beat in the plate final on Sunday 29:7. Well done lads and next year go one further.

However the U15s capped off the season for us by winning the County Cup. They beat Ryton 40 : 24 in a close game of rugby. They went 5:0 down early on but came back strong to be in front at half time 26:5. It looked all over but Ryton fought back and with less than 10 minutes to go the score was 26:24. But then in true Billingham style, our spirit came through and they scored two tries at the end to win 40:24. What better than to win the trophy at City’s ground against Ryton and to be presented the Cup by Durham County Vice President and our very own Mike Riby MBE. Mike seemed to swell with pride as he announced that Billingham was his club and he handed over the trophy. Congratulations to all the U15s, the management and coaches and in particular Dan Kirby and Sean Willis – well deserved everyone.

Unfortunately we had to settle in the end for winning the league and only 2 county cups and a plate. We could have had another plate and a cup but as we know the U16s and U17s were not allowed to play their ties because of an Act of God and poor communication and as we all know, the date of finals cannot be changed especially for juniors because ... well because..er..because... well I don’t know do I. It’s just a coincidence it was us and NO I am not bitter but I am entitled to my opinion and as I have sais before this is my opinion and not the official position of the club or it’s members J

Anyway back to the season being over...or not.. well there is the little matter of the Senior Cup. Now earlier in the week we were informed our match against Westoe would take place on Wednesday or Thursday and the final on Monday. Now we explained that Thursday would not work as we were going on tour but we could do Wednesday – which was agreed - but we couldn’t play the final on Monday. As is the rule which you should all know by now; the final can’t be moved so we had no option but to forfeit on the basis that we couldn’t play the final as we were away and therefore playing the semi after a long season for no reason seemed pointless. However, it looks like it might be back on.... Westoe can’t play the final either so therefore it will have to be re-arranged. Who would be a cup fixture secretary – certainly not me – helluva job. So I am in Finland and have got no idea what’s going on. They think it’s all over, it is now, oh no it isn’t, oh yes it isno it isn’t – get the picture – talk about a pantomime. Anyway what is for certain is that the final won’t be on Monday. Now here’s a thought, surely if WE couldn’t play on Monday and it couldn’t be moved and Westoe couldn’t play on Monday – the cup should just be given to Blaydon. So I can only assume Blaydon couldn’t play either. Well maybe we should cancel the Cup because you can’t change the date of the Cup final for any reason...just ask the U16s or the U17s. If not for an Act of God then maybe only for National League 1 or 2 side – but Hey Ho – next year we will be a National League side too :-P

It’s mid week and only a quick update – the Fat Lady is still gargling, not sure whether to swallow or spit, sing shout or scream but as soon as she starts singing I will let you know – then it will be over.

On a final note – Dinners. I know many teams have their dinners booked. The senior dinner is the 15^th. However the BIG one, the MAIN event, the club end of season dinner is on the 22^nd – a Saturday. Last year was the inaugural dinner and this year will be bigger and better. This is the whole club dinner, we will celebrate the whole season, reflect on our achievements, go through each age group, awards for managers and coaches. I would be delighted if every team was represented; managers, coaches, parents etc. Its a mixed event (you can bring the missus lads) and should be a great club event. I need each team to send me a synopsis of their season, awards and achievements, honours etc as well as a team photos and a couple more. We will be running some videos and celebrating all that we have achieved. Please, please come – speak to Colin and or me to confirm you are coming. Speak to Budgie and Lisa to provide details and photos. We wont get many season like this (well we will but lets not brag about it J) so lets celebrate.

But it’s NOT! I know I know the end of the season is in sight but we aren’t there yet.

Sorry for the late post - back at work this week and full on. But hey....what a party last week. If I had to put a song to the day it would be Lou Reed’s ‘Perfect Day’. My final recollection - about 8pm I think L - was just seeing everybody with a big grin on their face. Everyone kept hugging each other, kissing each other, picking each other up – or in Danny Robbo’s case – lifting anyone up he could get his arms round, including my terrified daughters and Wayne Finney! We could not have asked for a better day. The weather was perfect, there was anticipation and excitement in the air and I am delighted for the everyone involved in the club; past and present. I would like to publicly thank everyone for making the day so good. I thank everyone for coming down in great numbers again, I thank you all for wearing your Billingham colours and lots of full dress order on show too. Someone commented to me before the game, “With the music, the marquee and cake stall Rovers will be thinking “they think they have this won all ready” and that will give them additional incentive to beat us”. Well I could be smug and say, we won anyway but the reality is it was a valid comment as it may have given Rovers that extra incentive because they gave us a good game. I would like to thank Rovers for the sprit the game was played in and for making it an exciting affair -it made the party all the more enjoyable. We got emails on the day congratulating us from Sandal’s Chairman and from Carlisle’s coach. I got texts from loads of people and loads of facebook wishes – none to me I might add but all to the players and club in general. I could thank loads of people but there are just too many, BUT I have to thank the 18 men who brought us our day of glory. Without you – and the coaches and managers – we would not have had that day. There was immense pressure on your shoulders and you delivered. I thought it fitting in a way that Dave, last year’s Captain and out with injury for a good part of the season got the first try, but even more fitting the Chris got the winning score in front of the largest crowd I think we have ever had and right in front of the club house. What capped it all off was Joe, our new Captain in his debut season with the last touch of the game kicking the ball dead to call time. Well done guys...but remember it’s not over till the Fat Lady Sings and we have a game tomorrow.

I also would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the U9s for winning the County plate at Durham – well done guys and I know a couple of them were in awe of being invited into the dressing room after the game to watch the celebrations.

Congratulations also goes to Budgie’s U14s. They successfully retained their County Cup in a good game against West Hartlepool at WHTDSOB. They went 12:0 ahead in the first half and looked comfortable but then West comeback in the first part of the second and tied the game at 12:12. We then had a player sin binned and it looked worrying at that point. But they rallied back to win the game 26:12 (I think – I had the mother of all hangovers!). Anyway I did take some pictures and will be posting them over the weekend.

So all in all a great weekend with three pieces of silverware – we need that trophy cabinet!! However we have more to play for. Tomorrow the 1^st XV play the winners of North 1 West – Lymm. So (if you have any money left) get yourself down tomorrow. If we win tomorrow we can quite rightly say that we are the best Level 6 team in the North – for your information that means the best out of about 25 leagues or 250-ish teams! However with the pressure off we should get some good rugby from both teams and it will be good to see how we fair against another team at the top of their game. The other big game tomorrow is the Colts game. They are away at Wigton with whom they drew 18 all a few weeks ago. For those that don’t know the Colts have been in a CANDY style Saturday league with teams from three counties. The title will be decided tomorrow. Billingham’s problem is that they have had quite a few games conceded and in this league you get points for winning and points for playing as well as extra points when away. With several away games conceded they get the winning points but not the playing points – that’s 2 per game lost. If they win tomorrow and other results go their way they could win the league. I have no doubt if they had played and won the matches that were conceded (which they would have) and win tomorrow then they would have definitely won the league. Best of luck tomorrow lads.

But even by tomorrow night the Fat Lady won’t be singing because on Sunday we have the two more chances of silverware. The U13s are in the County Plate Final against Darlington at Rovers with a 13:00 ko and the U15s are in the County Cup Final against Ryton at City for an 11:00 ko. Now we want to win them both but that would be a great one to win! So please get up on Sunday morning and go to one or other or BOTH and support the lads in the same you all supported the seniors last week. What’s sad is that the powers that be have decided to forfeit Billingham from the U16s Cup final and the U17s from the Plate final. Maybe they were just fed up with us being in finals at U13s, U14s, U15s U16s U17s, the Colts the best team in the Colts Saturday League in Durham and....the 1sts Champions of North 1 East. Maybe I’m just cynical but just maybe they are sick of us winning things and when I say they I’m just being general because maybe it’s not a they it could be he...or a she.... Or maybe it’s not a conspiracy it’s just a coincidence.. after all they do happen. J

Now that reminds me; it’s been a while since I have had a bit of a rant. Do you know when in life, maybe at work or school or rugby J you come across a situation where you know someone is in a role that they just NOT should be in. Now sometimes they are good people; heart of gold, try their best, work hard but just aren’t good enough. Typically people rally round them and support and encourage and help them along because that’s what good people do. Stay with me here please! Now sometimes you just get people who are in a position of responsibility but don’t want the responsibility they just want the POWER, the CONTROL. You know the type; pompous, self righteous egotists, megalomaniacs, bullies and dictators. Do you know what else... they are typically very incompetent and arrogant and because of this no one dares say anything because these aren’t typically the people to cross – let’s be honest you wouldn’t want to cross an egotistical bully would you, especially when they are in a position to abuse their POWER. They usually get where they get because they lick their way and are just on an ego-trip to become the CEO or the Head Teacher or to get on to the RFU board as an example. Now that’s why I like rugby. You see rugby is one of the great sports; the comradery, the sportsmanship, the being as one and above all the HONESTY. That’s why you don’t get many pompous megalomaniacs in rugby.. but like all walks of life you do get the odd oneup here and there and I am sure we can all think of at least one – I can on a few occasions – strangely enough the same one too. Well I would like to stick 2 up ... no actual just 1UP at these people. If you know of someone like this then also stick 1UP. I think we should have a 1UP campaign to get rid of these people who have no respect for anyone and bully and abuse their position, who treat others unfairly, the worst kind of all those that take it out on young kids – it’s criminal. I think we should call this the “1UP campaign”.

Now the Fat Lady can’t even sing on Sunday because there is another game during the week – the 1sts have Westoe away in the semi-final of the cup. Now I know we were due to play it last week but Westoe couldn’t play the fixture. We offered to play the fixture here during the week but they preferred to postpone it a week. Now we are an accommodating club – it’s what clubs do for each other and we are just as happy to play it this Wednesday and I am sure if there were similar circumstances Westoe or any other team in the county would do the same for us. Now that reminds me – how remiss – I forgot to explain why we were forfeited from the U16s and U17s cup finals. Unfortunately as everyone knows the U16s were stranded in Malta on tour because of an Act of God – Volcanic Ash. Well this was deemed a good enough reason for Billingham to be penalised as it’s not possible for the final to be postponed for any reason even for an act of god. The U17s is not so dramatic – they had an availability issue due to conflict with representative rugby. So well in advance they arranged a different date to play the tie however when the opposition last minute realised they could no longer play on the pre-arranged and agreed date we were informed that we were to forfeit that game too. I am sure there is more to it than that – there always is but again – if only it was possible to re-arrange or postpone a fixture to accommodate everyone. You would think common sense would prevail. Shame it is not allowed isn’t it!! Especially when we are talking about the dreams of kids! Maybe we should 1UP the Volcano or representative rugby next time!! J

When Saturday comes

You wake with a start. Then relax and drift; it’s Saturday. But then you feel it. Deep down in your pit. It’s match day, it’s my day, this is it

The glint on the dew. The smell of the turf; it’s Saturday. The ghost of a cheer. The echo of beer. It’s today, it’s my day, it’s here

Arrive at the ground. Looking all round; it’s Saturday. A wink and a smile. Nod once in awhile. I’m here, it’s real, is this my day?

The nerves start to build. The iPod up loud; it’s Saturday. Check and double check. Everything is here. Louder, louder, am I ready?

My mates and my team. My club and my dream; its’ Saturday. We warm up together. Run throughs to make better. We are ready, we are all ready, we are here!

The smell of the room. The sound of the boom; it’s Saturday. Tape, boots and laces. Belts and braces. Deep Heat, Vicks and Vas; it’s time

We stand up as one. Eyes on each other; it’s Saturday. The tip and the tap. A nod and a pat. A knock from the ref; game on.

A big intake of breath. One final squeeze; it’s Saturday. The long walk down the hall. Up front with the ball. A silent prayer of thanks; game on.

Out through the door. And into the roar, it’s kick off time. Across the white line. One at a time. No need to look at the crowd; they’re loud.

A must win game. For our moment of fame; it’s our time. We defend every inch. With not even a flinch. No penalties, no mistakes it’s our day.

Hit after hit. Ruck after ruck; the line getting closer. Each contact a contest. We give each our best. And the time ticks along oh too slow.

When the final whistle goes. My body knows; it’s Saturday. Then reality sets in. The result is a win. Destiny fulfilled; the glory well earned.

But then with a start. I hear the alarm; it’s Saturday. It was only a dream. The match hasn’t been. But I smile as I know what’s to come.

Sleep well tonight, because when you awake you have your destiny to fulfil.

Calm down - It’s not your Bow time yet!

My last post of the week will be later on this afternoon, but this is an announcement about tomorrow. Remember to wear your green and white. ... a final training session and then final selection. Then the 18 will be known. The 18 who will be chosen to represent Billingham RUFC on our day of destiny. It’s hard for me to put into words the weight of expectation that exists within the community that is Billingham Rugby on the outcome of Saturday.

When Saturday comes.... everything that has gone before means nothing if we fail; the game against Sandal; the unbeaten home record, the last gasp try against Rovers earlier in the season, will all mean nothing. It is not my intention to increase the pressure on the chosen 18; because;

When Saturday comes they know that failure is not an option. What I need for them to know is that;

When Saturday comes we are 100% behind them. This blog is about you and me and not the 18. I know that the pressure in recent games has affected many of us in different ways. I have heard critical comments about individuals performance, about errors of judgement, about whether to kick or run, about refereeing decisions. We all play a better game from the sidelines; we all see things others don’t, we don’t always agree with selection and we wouldn’t make mistakes would we?

When Saturday comes we want to hear your voice and we want it LOUD.

When Saturday comes we want to hear your applause and your appreciation.

When things don’t quite go right, “never mind lads, keep going”.

When the decisions don’t go our way “never mind lads, keep going”.

When we concede points “never mind lads, keep going”.

To the rugby aficionados amongst you; save your comments for after the match; save your criticism for someone who might give a damn; save your objections and your frustrations for another day. Leave all that behind when you cross the gates into the ground, but bring your voices, bring your applause and bring your support.

When Saturday comes, let us get the referee on our side by the way we behave

I was at the club last night and there was a real feeling of expectation. Some people saying ‘if we win ...’ and others saying ‘when we win....’. Some not wanting to tempt fate and others with total belief. It’s the players and coaching staff however who are the ones who have the belief and rightly so. There is no nonchalance or arrogance but a genuine belief that preparations are going well, the spirit is strong and we are ready!

2 years ago we were in a very similar position needing to win the last game to win the league and get promoted. In the main we have the same side today; the difference however is that 2 years ago we had not won the league or the cup. Yes we had a great season, but we had a young side who had not experienced the drama of what was too unfold. Two years on, playing at a higher level and unbeaten at home this year, the team is more experienced and have the knowledge of 2 years ago to fall back on. Their belief is grounded on experience and their confidence is well placed. It’s the likes of me who have to watch from the sidelines and was missing two years ago who is nervous!

As you are all no doubt aware, Paul Burgum has just completed his marathon walk from Portsmouth – over 400 miles in 17 days. Well now he is back home and what many of you don’t know is that the day Paul returned was the day of the Sandal game. Not satisfied with walking for 3 weeks he put on his boots and played for the 3rds. Well Paul will be at the club this weekend in two capacities; one playing rugby for Billingham and the other to continue his incredible fund raising activities for BCT’s nominated charities namely The Great North Air Ambulance and Cole Lancaster a local 2 yr old who suffers from Cerebral Palsy. Paul and friends will be shaking their buckets at half time on Saturday so put your hand in your pocket and help a couple of worthy causes.

Yesterday evening I asked you to wear your badge with pride this weekend. Well if the Irish make claim to the 17^th March as their own because it’s St. Patricks day, well we can stake a claim for April the 17^th. Now as you will all no doubt be aware, Billingham Rugby Club was formed in 1924 as the Rugby Section of the Synthonia Sports Club at Synthetic Ammonia and Nitrates Company, which later became I.C.I. The colours of these chemicals were green and white. Now just as someone called St. John can be addressed phonetically as Sin-jun, well St. Anthony could be equally be addressed as Sin-thon and therefore St. Anthonio could be addressed as Sin-thonia. Now St. Anthonio (of Padua, Italy J) is famous for being the ‘quickest’ Saint in history (stay with me here!) as well as being the patron saint of missing persons. He was also renowned for his strength of character and ‘spirit’ as this was his strength. Now I find these coincidences spooky. St Anthony or St. Antonio or lets just call him Sin-thonia, was the quickest saint in history, is the patron of people missing or lost in the wilderness in the way that we were through the 80’s and 90’s with nowhere to call home and later a town was named after him that became famous because of the Alamo! Well maybe I’m losing it or something but surely Greenwood Road is our Alamo and we repel all that try to take us on!

So, forever more, the 17^th April shall be known as Sin Thonia day, Billingham Day, Our day because Our Spirit is our Strength.

....and still counting.

I never updated everyone on other results at the weekend. The 3rds had a good day against Middlesbrough 4ths; winning 36 points to something...! Not sure of the exact final score but the 3rds have got stronger as the season has gone on and there is a real spirit in the team. It’s great to see so many old faces back and also some of the Colts coming through and playing. I spent my first year in senior rugby playing for the 4ths which was very much a veterans side at the time and it was great experience. I also believe that it improves the older players game too as they have a sense of responsibility to look after and nurture the young talent coming through and this ensures they focus on the wider team more. Credit to all who have stuck with the 3rds this year and in particular to Mick Sudron who has down wonders to develop a great spirit in the camp. It can only get stronger and next year with a whole bunch of colts coming through we could be in danger of looking for a 4^th team!!

Talking of the Colts; they won convincingly away at Morpeth. It was a strange day as the Colts were playing on the pitch alongside the main pitch where Morpeth 1sts were playing against Gateshead in the league. There was a big crowd and whilst the senior game drew the spectators in I suspect some were glancing over to the colts game as Billingham beat Morpeth 62:8. Meanwhile many of the Billingham supporters (ne included) had one eye on the game and one eye on my my phone waiting for texts to come in with the scores. I know it must have been tense at Old Brods but I can tell you it’s pretty tense staring at a phone and waiting for it to vibrate!! Credit to Morpeth who stuck at it right until the very end and never gave up giving everything they had but on the day, Billingham were just too good. Even though they went light with a squad of only 19, everything just seemed to click together. They scored 31 points each half, 5 tries and 3 conversions. Well done to young Jordan Potts who scored a hat-trick and just like his father could not be seen for dust due to the threat if the impending ‘jug’. What Jordan doesn’t realise is it carries over to this week. There are some great photos in particular of Cole Henderson fending off two tacklers on the wing and they can be seen on my Flickr site (link in the side panel).

Tuesday and training. The lads will be going through their penultimate training session before Saturdays match. I was looking at the RFU website and it occurred to me that we have something else to play for this weekend – an unbeaten home record! We are the only team to remain unbeaten at home in the league. For those that don’t know, it was a special occasion for young Tom Kill last weekend who came off the bench to make his 1^st team debut at Old Brodieans. Those who have known Tom for years and have watched him develop as a player it must have been a very special moment; not least for his parents. We all know about Tom’s exploits for England U16’s last year but there is nothing like your 1^st XV debut. Congratulations Tom and with any luck we may get to see you make your home debut this weekend.

Last night I asked for you to come on Saturday in your numbers. I know that Dan Hyndman and Andy Dixon have been posting notices across Billingham. I have been onto the Gazette and we have other communication lines building too. Yesterday I asked for you to come in your numbers; now I am asking for you to come and wear your Billingham badge. Put on your old Billy shirt, your new hoody, your tracksuit top, your tour shirt or anything else that either has our badge on or is green and white. The 17^th of March may be St. Patricks day and may be the day the world goes green but lets make the 17^th April the day Billingham goes green!

..and counting. I wake up thinking about Saturday. I go to sleep thinking about Saturday. I drove to Whitby this afternoon for a ride out and could not think about anything else but Saturday!! I get chewed up inside every time I think about this weekend. It’s killing me because there is absolutely nothing I can do about it but wait.

Okay I have a few things that I am on with by-way of preparing myself for this weekend, but in the end I just have to wait. I hate the fact that I am not 20 years younger fighting for a place in the team or on the bench. I wish with every sinew in my body I was young enough, fit enough and good enough to be in that dressing room come Saturday afternoon. I missed out on our promotion run in 2 years ago as I was on holiday. This year I am also on holiday but I am holidaying in Teesside this year.

I have received e-mails from Mark Ladyman, Paul Metcalfe and Jimmy Sanderson all wishing the lads all the best this weekend. My advice to them is, book a flight or get in your car and get yourself here. We all know Rovers aren’t going to come here and roll over on Saturday but all we can do is plan to win and for those of us not in that dressing room, let’s give the lads our voices, our cheers and our support.

I intend to post each day with an update on what’s going on and to keep people in touch. If anyone has any wishes that they want passing on via the blog please e-mail me and I will do what I can. We are hoping to beat the record crowd we achieved against Sandal this weekend. I would like to send out a call to all members to come down on Saturday; especially all youth coaches and managers; bring your squad down and be a part of a special day. Remember for children under 12, entry is free. In addition this weekend, all youth members who turn up and show their membership card (U16 and below) will gain free entry to the ground; but ........ bring a friend, an aunt, an uncle, your mam and dad, nana and granddad, sister and brother. We want create an atmosphere that helps our lads over that try line time and time again.

Spring is in the air!

Dare we say it? Are we coming to the serious end of the season? The clocks have ‘sprung’ forward, the light nights are arriving, we have even seen a little sun! I was down the club last night and it was great to see the place so busy. Youth teams training across all the fields and the U17s (with a few U16s thrown in) competing against Durham County U17s... and winning!

All this following on form a good Easter weekend. It’s unusual for us to play at Easter; it’s usually our senior tour weekend and we are closed. Colin was open Good Friday and had a good day. Saturday was another great day at home with the 1sts beating Durham City to keep us top of the table. The 2nds were beaten 32:31 at Carlisle and the 3rds won at home against local rivals Stockton.

The match of the day of course had to be the senior match. Another good crowd considering many were away on holiday but also a nervous crowd. You could feel the tension. Each match is a cup final and this one was actually a league match and a cup qtr final. Rumours were rife regarding Durham’s recent signings, one from Blaydon, and 3 antipodeans; 1 from NZ and 2 from Oz. The fact is clubs at this level will find ways to pay players or other ways to ‘accommodate’ them to play. In the leagues above it’s common place and something we are going to have to come to terms with if we achieve our goal of promotion. However, can you imagine being a Durham City half back, to find you are ousted by some temporary visitors to our shores who will no doubt be back on their way home after the end of the season. What does that say to the ‘faithful’ who have stood by the club through thick and thin. This is why we are the club we are and we won’t be going down the rocky road of survive at all costs; win at all costs; succeed at all costs. This is short termism and will come to bite you when you turnaround to find the ‘faithful’ have lost faith. Anyway, it didn’t matter to us in the end. Great result and now we are now down to 2 more games for promotion. Anyway back to reality – one game at a time and Old Brodleians away this weekend. There has been a lot of talk about the Rovers match.. well let’s take it a step at a time and win this weekend first , then we can talk about Rovers. However, if you do want to get carried away, then how about this... win them both and it’s all over bar the party! Or is it? You see if we win the league then we go into the Champion of Champions knock out. The winner of our league plays the winner of North 1 West – probably Lymm the week after. If you win that you go into the semis against the Midland winner the week after that (tour weekend mmm!!!) and if you win that then you play in the final for the Level 6 Champion of Champions...... at Twickenham on the 8^th May. Now how about that for an incentive!

There was no Sunday rugby this weekend due to it being Easter however the Colts put a mixed U17/U18 team into the Sandal U19 7s on Monday. 10 teams of which we were the only North East representative with Blaydon pulling out last minute... obviously heard we had entered. Anyway, the lads played a year and in some cases 2 years up, travelled with a limited squad of 10 (12 aloud) and gave a god performance. Not having played 7s before it took a few matches to get into their stride which meant they were knocked out of the cup (eventually won by West Park Leeds who beat Harrogate in the final) but went to win the plate, beating Bridlington in the final 52:19. Well done guys and they can still play next year.

Looking forward to this weekend, the big game is at Old Brods, the 2nds have a free week, the 3rds are at home to Middlesbrough and the Colts are away at Morpeth. A big game for them too as they need to win their 4 remaining matches to win their league! Sunday will be a full fixture list so check out Budgies update in the Youth Blog. The season is fast coming to an end and there is so much to play for at all levels. Keep on ruckin guys and keep reading. Look out next week for some special updates.

But, that wasn't the end, or even the beginning of the end, but just the end of the beginning. Several weeks ago I said if we win all 6 matches we will win the league. Well we are three for three, but we still have three to go. Problem is two of them are local to us and will undoubtedly go out of their way to prevent us from being promoted.

For those that have been hiding all week or our regular overseas readers who don't know; we had a special day last Saturday. Prior to the match I received messages of support from all corners. The furthest from Australia; Paul Metcalfe sent best wishes from himself, Jan, Chloe, Luke, Adam and Ryan. I had emails from members who could not be there on the day and from friends and family of Billingham Rugby Club. But best of all, you came in your hoards. We had 47 people in the Kitten Club for the day. A big shout goes out to Steve Hart who decided to have his retirement 'do' from Shell at the Club and brought 20 people to the club making a significant contribution to us on the day. I was sat in the snug (entertaining our guests!) about an hour before kick-off and all I could see was people coming through the gates in numbers. I hardly recognised anyone and then it occurred to me; people were bringing their family. The call I put out last week seemed to have worked. I'll tell you, but will deny if ever asked, I had tears in my eyes. I could not believe what I could see and I was proud to be a part of it. By kick off there was still about 100 people on the balcony or upstairs but the pitch was surrounded. 600 people came to watch the game. 600 people! Faces I had not seen in years were there to support and lend us their voices. Big thank you to the likes of Tim Bott who came up from Northampton to watch and then go on to pay to join the Kitten Club. Big thank you for all the Billingham families that were there. I can't mention everyone but as an example; Dave Robinsons' father, mother, girlfriend, sister, brother-in-law were there to watch. 4 generations and a total of 7 Blenkinsopps, that's before we start on the Hyndmans, Thomsons, McGraths, Shepherds and so on. On behalf of Billingham Rugby Club we thank you. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Sandal. They also brought a great support and made the day all the more exciting.

As everyone now knows we beat Sandal 25 : 9 to go 2 points clear but Sandal still have a game in hand. We still need to win every game. It starts all over again this weekend. Now I know this weekend is Easter weekend and everyone has plans but we still need YOU to support us. The players know that all that last weekend was would mean nothing if they slipped up tomorrow. Same applies to YOU. All that support and effort would mean nothing if we the 16^th man wasn't there tomorrow. We are ever so grateful for last weekend, but we need YOU again tomorrow.

On other fronts, the 2nds did not have a game. I know from the rumblings before kick-off that not everyone was best pleased by the decision not to play a friendly. All I can say is; one man has pretty much single handily kept the 2nds going this year and Brown Dog remember; you can't please all of the people all of the time!

The 3rds unfortunately were beaten 17:10 after a good start and being ahead 10:5 at half time. Well done to Mick and the lads and keep it going. They also had a guest appearance from another hero on the day – Burgs.

Congratulations to Paul Burgum and Meg who completed their mammoth walk last Saturday. Great to see Paul back down the club and looking remarkably fresh! Anyhow a month's worth of walking was apparently not enough for Paul who proceeded to play the first half for the 3rds. Unbelievable!

The Colts lost a close match away at Carlisle. They went ahead in the opening minutes but were eventually beaten 27:23. They still hold out hopes of winning the league but their current form means they have only managed a draw in their last 3 games. If they can get back to winning ways having only been beaten twice in the league all season it's could still be on.

There is lots going on and please keep a look out on the news board. For those wanting end of season dinners please book early before its too late.

We will also be putting out a survey on the club in the coming weeks. We are trying some new things and would love to get your feedback. Last week we installed a new beer/lager – Amstel. It seemed to go well as the barrel was gone by 6pm! We will be trying some new ales and bottles over the coming months and want to get your feedback. As I have said before, if anyone has any comment on the club or some constructive criticism then e-mail me. We can't get better if we don't know. However, if you have a comment and it's something you could act on personally to make a difference; then that's even better.

I have a whole bunch of other stuff; photos, updates etc but enough is enough for today.

On Saturday at 3pm, 18 young men will come together with the future of this club in their hands. Where will you be?

On my last post I mentioned we had 6 games to go, 6 games to win for glory! Well 2 have passed and we have won them both. Wins at home to Percy Park and away at Pontefract have put us in a position where we dare to dream of promotion. We have 4 games left and each one will be a cup final; each one will be as big as the last; each one will take us one step closer. Our destiny is in the hands of a select special few. Our forwards who have found their belief and now feel that they can take any pack and drive them 30 yards at a time. Ask Percy Park? Ask Pontefract? Our backs who have galvanized together into an immovable defensive force following the injuries at Old Crocs.

Well there is no bigger game than this weekend. We are sitting top of North One East on points difference above Sandal. Sandal have a game in hand. This weekend we play Sandal at home. If we win we go 2 points clear. If they then win their game in hand they go level again. Our massive points scored will ensure as long as we win this weekend and the next 3 games we will be promoted champions.

I have spent the last couple of Saturday evenings in the company of the 1^st team. They believe they can win every game! I believe in them! Do you? Do you believe that little old Billingham Rugby Club dare to think of being a National rugby club? Then this is the weekend to show your support. We are calling on everyone past and present who believe and want to be there on the day when we recall that famous result against Sandal to come and watch this Saturday. If you are a mini or junior rugby player; you NEED to be there; bring your parents; this is your future. You could become a junior player next year of a National league club. Our future, your future can change dramatically this weekend.

So much going on

I did intend to take a short break from blogging, the club and everything over the next couple of weeks as the pressure has been building. It’s hard enough having a day job but when the club starts to eat into your day, evening and night time as well as weekends it’s tough!

Problem is …. There is so much going on!

It has been a torrid time of late as no doubt most of you will have ‘read’ in the tone of my recent blogs. The weather has really put the club in a delicate position but we will as always come through, thanks in the main, to you our members. I know lack of playing time has frustrated everyone and the youth section have probably suffered the most with this. It’s not ideal I know but there is little we can do about it. Just take a look at some of the premiership rugby and soccer pitches on the TV.

Anyway, there has been a great response to some of my comments. The youth section is starting to stir and events are being planned. I know that the U10s have planned a youth night on a Tuesday. For those teams who only come down on a Sunday morning; this is a great opportunity to get involved in the club on other days. One of the best days to come down when you are not playing is on a Saturday and see the 1^st XV play – it’s inspiring to see ex-minis playing 1^st XV and playing at a high standard too! I am aware that other teams are also looking to get involved and become more a part of the club. On Sunday one team went to see the Falcons but 20 of them had Sunday lunch before they went! I bang on about tours a lot and I do have some issues with the costs of these and the impact they are having o the club in general but when things are done for the benefit of the whole it works. The U16s had fund raising casino night the other week and in doing so booked the club and put some much needed revenue over the bar. Well done and keep it up.

Mixed results last week across the seniors. The 1sts continued their promotion push with a great win at Old Crossleyans. 7:3 down at half time was worrying but they eventually won out 10:32. We picked up some injuries along the way that will side line a couple of players this weekend, the worst being the injury to Ste Hutchinson. I saw him on Saturday night with his ear held on with tape. I understand he has had 20 stitches to re-attach his ear as well as a bucket of glue! Get well soon Hutchy. I said GET WELL SOON. The 2nds were beaten by Horden in the Candy League and I think the 3rds got a draw! Not sure about the youth results but I did get a couple of match results from when Iwent to read them this evening they were just photos – sorry!

Paul Burgum and Black Meg started their walk this week. They are walking from Portsmouth to Billingham to raise money for the Billingaham Charity Trophy; specifically this year for the Great North Air Ambulance and Cole Lancaster, a young local lad who has Cerebral Palsy. It makes you realize what can be achieved with dedication and reading his blog has restored my faith in humanity! Check it out and give both Paul and Meg your support.

Big weekend coming up. We have a big game against Percy Park tomorrow. We are currently 11 points ahead of Rovers who are in 3^rd with 6 games to go. A win tomorrow will ensure at least a play-off spot. But we don’t want to do that – no we want to win the league. To do that we have to just win all 6 of our remaining games. Each game is a cup final and if really want to see something exciting then come and watch our last 6 games, starting tomorrow at home. And if you have any energy left after that we have England kicking off at 17:00 against the Auld enemy.

Now I have been going on a bit about the latest craze to sweep the club; well there are actually two!!! One I will comment on in a special edition mid-week, but the one that seems to be gripping the club at the moment is….. yes you guessed it….. Darts! Not the sport I would have imagined, not as safe as a Wii (I have seen some of you play don’t forget) but incredible participation. You have 1^st team players playing with Colts, U10s with U16s, seniors with minis, dads with lads and all we need now is for some of the mams to get involved! So if you want to get involved then tomorrow evening we are having a Darts, Pie and Peas night. Not sure how you through darts at a pie but I am sure Chris will show us. Not that I am saying that Chris knows a lot about pies... but… well …..err. And it is also an event to raise funds for the BCT this year. So it ties nicely back to Burg’s and Meg. Although I suspect they would prefer the pie and peas at the moment over the darts! Okay I am rambling – time to move on.

Finally remember Sunday is Mothers Day. If you are thinking of Sunday lunch at the club – I strongly suggest you book as bookings have been taken, tables and times have been reserved but I believe that there are still some spaces available.

I am a little late this week and will be brief too - sorry. Currently sat having nursing a hangover with a coffee in Richmond where yet again I find myself missing out watching rugby at home whilst working on a weekend again. At work its the end of our financial quarter, its busy as heck and I have the onerous task of having too look after clients all day whilst they drag me down to Twickenham.
Anyway back to more important stuff. Good wins last week for the 1sts and the colts but unfortunately the 2nds and 3rds both lost in the cup. I have no results from the youth section to share with you but they maybe on colins blog.
Mixed response to last weeks post and all comments have been taken on board. One comment was that I was being too negative. Can't argue with that and I was already starting to feel that myself. Not been a lot to shout about lately and the weather continue to cause havoc. Maybe some of my comments were a little unfair due to the fact that the lack of matches and training has kept many away. I would ask coaches and managers to try and be a little more innovative where possible. Although its matches and rugby that keeps teams together, rugby is special in as much as its the social side that is different. Its at times like this where need to think of ways to keep the kids coming down, if only to play darts or to watch re-runs of matches on the TV. Interesting though that one email wholeheartedly agreed with me and the lack of involvement from across the club - and this person has been involved in the youth section longer than I have been involved with the club!! One sad comment from a parent was that they felt their son played for the club rather than being a part of the club. In other words, they didn't feel there was an atmosphere. Sad and disappointing and the challenge there is firmly at the feet of the coaches and managers first than all of us afterwards.
Will try and post again shortly but good luck to all teams today and I will look to be more positive.

Incoming.. the passion and the hard reality.

Well I certainly hit a nerve with my last post J I don’t post to create trouble I just say what I feel. If I had £1 for every person that told me over the last 20 years that Billingham Rugby Club is their passion and their life I would be a wealthy man....well actually I wouldn’t be because I would have given the proceeds to the club and therein lies the difference, the reality and the truth!

I had quite a few responses to last week’s post, including from Ilkley’s Hon. Secretary and one from their former President and Chairman. I also had responses from some of our members too. Not everyone agreed with everything I had to stay and some had a slightly different perspective than me, but in the main my points were well received. I am sure some of you out there won’t agree with anything I say, but hey ho...life as a Chairman. It’s good to know that my blog is read and I am not just typing away to myself for no reason (apart from therapy). Also it’s good to know that rugby supporters away from Billingham read it too. Good and thanks to all those who took the time to respond.

Following on from the disappointment of Saturday, I was also disappointed on Sunday. I know it was Valentine’s day but let’s be honest.. hands up if you watched the England match last Sunday. If there are more than 35 of you with your hands up and you call yourself friends of Billingham Rugby Club....shame on you! SHAME ON YOU! Now before you kick off, if you had a genuine excuse then chill out – I’m not talking to you. If you didn’t then I am. Just in case you haven’t been reading my rants or have been on the moon for the last 6 weeks – we have had lots of snow = matches cancelled = loss of income = club struggles. Even those of you who can’t spell algebra will understand the simplicity of that last equation. Now this is going to cause a stir – I reckon there was 5-10 social members in and maybe 3-4 youth members. Now we have about 300 social members (and that’s typically one per family). Now maybe I’m being a little bit simple about this, but surely a social member should be social. At 13:30 on a Sunday afternoon just before England are live on the TV, I reckon there was no more than 10 members from the whole of the Youth Section in the building out of about 400-500. We claim to have one of the strongest youth sections in the area – not last Sunday! Maybe we should just shut the club on a Sunday at 14:00 and let Colin use it for functions? What do you reckon? In fact why don’t we just do what most football teams do; change in the car park and go straight off home after the match on a Sunday morning. Now before you all start with the senior v junior thing; that’s not what it’s about. I, more than most (and yes there are others) can speak from a ‘whole club’ point of view. I have seen over the last few weeks the senior squad time after time support the club....alone! I know I harp on but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don’t send me an e-mail arguing the difference or bemoaning my comments. Just prove me wrong! Spend some time in YOUR club.

On a positive note I met with Peter Robinson our brewery rep today and after our meeting we had lunch at the club. Colin and Sue have been open Thursday and Friday lunchtimes now for a couple of weeks and will be trialling this for a few weeks more. I was there having lunch today – very nice Scampi for me and a gourmet chicken burger for Peter oh and with home-made chips - beautiful – along with the Kers, the Adnetts, Gordon and his wife, several colts (obviously on half term) and Chris Hyndman and his family. I am not sure Ben and Millie were too keen on me hosting a meeting in the corner when they were trying to eat their lunch and watch Cartoon Network J Anyone out there wanting to prove me wrong about my point earlier, you want to try the lunches – worth a trip out on a Friday.

One of the upsides of the meeting with Peter, is that Colin will be making some changes over the coming weeks. We will be running a few promotions and will be looking to try a few new things.....all with the purpose of bringing you some variety and to offer you some more value. Look out for the promotions in the coming weeks.

Tomorrow is looking a little bleak. The rain has put a dampener on things. The 1^st XV match looks okay but as of this morning the 3rds and Colts were still hanging in the balance. After last weekend we need everyone to play. I don’t think on the Sunday we had much success with the youth teams either; due to cancellation or defeat. We have had some good weekends and fortunately not many bad ones; last week was definitely one of the latter. Tomorrow is another day and let’s hope it’s a GREAT one for Billingham Rugby Club.

So Jack whilst we are doing this it’s only fair that you remain the club until we get back and keep your mates their too .. buying beer J

Now I know that last week I promised you an article on a new craze sweeping the region..sorry but it will have to wait. I have collected some information but not had chance yet to collect the rest.

Now I know I have been a bit doom and gloom lately but here is a light at the end of the tunnel! There is a silver lining up above! There is a wind of change sweeping in from afar! Our finances are about to improve! Super Sundays are back! In case you don’t know, John and Judie arrive back in the country next week...for good. The world will be a far better place and I can’t wait.

Thanks to all of you for whom this club is their passion – you know who you are! For those who may have lost their way a bit, come on back, we miss you. And for those who are just on the edge peeping in, welcome. It’s a great place to be. It has a great social atmosphere we just want to share it with you.

It’s unusual for me to blog mid-weekend but the disappointment of yesterday has been playing on my mind!

We got beat by bottom of the table Ilkley 21 : 18 but that was only part of the disappointment.

My day started knowing there would be no home fixtures....not good news as we need the activity in the club. I was also disappointed because I had decided to stay and watch the top of the table clash in the Colts league but hey, every cloud... so off I want with to Ilkley hoping for a decent performance against an improving side to stay top of North 1 East. Yes it was a disappointing performance and most will know that one of things I rarely comment on in my blog is playing performance, tactics or selection. It’s NOT my place. I won’t be talking out of turn however to say we were very lacklustre yesterday; flat from the beginning and never looked (until the last 20 minutes) like we would do anything. I am however going to reference the performance during the game as a way to highlighting my major disappointment of yesterday. As the game went on the Billingham supporters started to realise that we may lose the match and instead of showing support for our team they looked for faults in the refereeing decisions. I thought I saw a few bad decisions or off the ball incidents that were missed and I don’t think ever decision went our way.. but do you know what... that’s life. The problem with being a supporter is you are by the very nature supporting one side and therefore you see the game through blinkers, especially those who have never played the game. But even those that have played the game should consider going on a referees course and learn how difficult it is, especially with no assistants on the sidelines just a mob of supporters.

About 15 minutes to go to the end of the game one of the Ilkley supporters whom I recognised from previous matches home and away made a comment to me, ‘You aren’t used to losing are you!’. It was a rhetorical question and meant to goad and not worthy of answer. But then I thought about it and calmly pointed out that I didn’t think his comment was fair and that I have always had the utmost respect for Ilkley and their members, the way they conduct themselves and the friendly and hospitable approach that they have. More importantly I was disappointed by his comment which can only have been meant to create animosity and cause friction. I also highlighted that both sets of supporters were getting a little aggressive and making snide comments. The gentleman in question acknowledged my point, apologised for his comment and we shook hands. We then discussed parts of the game with each other up until the final whistle. In the manner you would expect at a rugby match. However, during that last 15 minutes I couldn’t help myself from listening to the shouts, the conversations and the comments being hurled. I think the Ilkely supporters were goading us somewhat and hey why not, they were winning and our supporters were giving them licence. I don’t think I heard a single comment for the last 15 minutes from a Billingham supporter that wasn’t about the referee. Why is it that when we get behind or lose it’s the referees fault?

Was I at a different game than some others. How many penalties did we give away? How many times do we open our mouth and get marched back 10 metres? The penalty just before half time for holding a players jersey and not letting go, the third in succession that lead to their first try; the failure to deal with the second half kick-off that lead to the second try; the penalty that followed and the back chat that marched us back 10 metres that gave them 3 points and then the follow up penalty that cost us a yellow card. Were these all the referees fault. What about the unforced errors and knock-ons; the indecision as to which way to go after two phases; left or right. I am not having a go at the players; they know they had a bad day. We are very fortunate that we don’t get many and yes it was disappointing, but do you know what; other teams have bad days too and most of them more than we do. I highlight these points not to pour criticism on the players but to highlight that ~~many~~ sorry some of our supporters should stop being so fixated on the referee. Support your team, shout when they do well but above all encourage and be positive when they are struggling. In soccer they talk about the 12^th man. Have we got a 16^th man or does the negativity from supporters transcend onto the field and act as a 16^th man to the opposition. That’s also rhetorical.

I have no doubt I will get slated by the people that believe this is aimed at them. Don’t really care. It’s not aimed at any individual or group and I am entitled to my opinion. I know I’m not perfect and I get frustrated with referees at times; who doesn’t, but as I have said before, we want to better than the best. If the cap fits, please leave it at home. We want you support, the players and the club want your support but we want your energy and your positivity. Great winners are great winners because they can take defeat with grace and retain their dignity throughout.

Our spirit is our strength... just not yesterday!

Another Friday and another big weekend of rugby ahead.

First of all, well done to all teams last week. The 1^st won at home to Darlington 34:7 and remain top of the league. We just need to keep the momentum going and take nothing for granted. Good luck this weekend at Ilkley. The 2nds also won last week in their first league match since the break. They have suffered badly with postponements but got a great result against Carlisle Crusaders, winning 21:13. Good luck tomorrow which I believe is home to Durham City even though the date is wrong on the website. I don’t have any information on the 3rds – sorry. The Colts won away at Westoe last Saturday. I was disappointed to miss this match as I had coached this team for 12 years and this was always their bogey team. Never beaten them in all that time and to miss this first victory was frustrating for me but I am delighted for the lads. They won 11:5 in another tense game and remain joint top of the North Colts league with Wigton whom they play tomorrow, both sides having played 8 and won7. The U17s were narrowly beaten in the County Cup by Darlo on Sunday in a very close match, eventually losing 3:5. Good luck to all sides playing tomorrow and Sunday.

I am really looking forward to this weekend. It’s been ages since I have seen any rugby on a Saturday (apart from last week of course!). I will be staying at home tomorrow to watch the 2nds and the Colts and so will miss the 1^st team game but hope to see the lads when they get back tomorrow evening. I also look forward to seeing most of you on Sunday for the ~~England match~~ Valentines lunch. Lads, pull your finger out and bring your Valentine down to the club for lunch on Sunday. I can’t believe how thoughtful the RFU have been; putting on an afternoon of entertainment for the ladies. We all know how much they love watching Jonny and the boys. So come on lads, you know it makes sense, they want you to bring them down. All those youth team players listen up!! I have an idea to get you into your dad’s good books. Now you know he won’t remember to get your mum a card or a present on Sunday. So why don’t you surprise them both by booking a table at the club and let them have a Sunday lunch without your mum having to cook or your dad having to order a takeaway. And while they are having dinner, you can watch the match!! Your dad will be indebted to you for ages and you mum will love it! I almost forgot, I have a Dubai 7’s shirt that I will be raffling on Sunday at the end of the England match. If you are not there at the final whistle, you won’t win the prize.

In case you didn’t know, the club is now open for lunch on Thursday and Friday. I think this is the second week and Colin and Sue are hoping to entice some new customer in to the club by providing quality lunches at affordable prices. So next POETS day, have a nice lunch down at the club. I shall be trying it out for the first time next Friday. If you are there having lunch when I am at the bar.. I might just buy you a drink!

Now I know that my blog is read far and wide so this may interest some of you from days gone by!. The other day I found a couple of little gems in the club; a senior playing shirt (unworn) from over 20 years ago in mint condition and.....even better..... an unworn, brand new Welsh Tour shirt from 1987 – size XL. It’s in quarters. Now I have already had a couple of people try to claim them...tough! However if anyone is interested in either please drop me an e-mail with an offer and a reason why you should have it. Now it won’t necessarily be the highest offer that will get the shirt, after all we aren’t e-bay, but it WILL put you in a good position. However a good and valid reason or story could be the deal breaker.

Take a look at the News site and check out the names of youth team players receiving honours recently. We have 8 selected to play for County at U14 and U15 as well as one player at U16 selected to play for North of England. Well done lads. We also have a player selected to play for England Colleges. That’s two years in a row we have provided a player to England Colleges.

Chris Hyndman is appealing for volunteers (20 in total) to help out next Saturday at the bucket shake at the Falcons. For those who don’t know, Chris and Jack Smith’s mum rode from Newcastle to Northampton earlier in the year to raise money for Jack’s trust. The bucket shakes, are the clubs allowing us to raise money before premiership matches. The first of a few and Chris needs support. If you have the time and want to help raise money for Jack’s trust please contact Chris on 07846706238 or email me and I will forward it on to him.

Just a brief note this week, but at least it's a note!
Well so far so good. As I right this it's grey and overcast BUT there is NO snow to be seen anywhere......yet! I can't tell you how gutted I was last weekend, waking up at 6am and looking out of the window. I felt a mixture of frustration, annoyance and dread. I knew then there would be no rugby that day...or the next... The colts had been given a bye to the next round when West couldn't field a team which meant for the first time in weeks I would be able to watch the 1sts at home. We had a full sponsorship programme that would bring in additional and very needed revenue. Best laid plans eh? So another week with no rugby. Not good for our promotion hopes - players need games and even worse the club needs the revenue. Anyway, so far everything looks on good for today; Darlo at home and special thanks goes out to our sponsor, Roofclad who have had more cancellations and postponements than anyone. Enjoy your day guys and let's secure a win and remain top of the league.
Most of you who aren't regular visitors to the club during week will notice we have just about completed the refurb. The sofas have arrived.... last sunday Gordon and Colin looked like a pair of old bachelor boys cuddling up to each other on one, whilst 'lightweight' sayers was flat out later in the afternoon on another. At least he had the manners to keep his shoes of the leather.. partly because Gemma would have kicked him if he hadn't.
Anyway, I can't be there today, going to see my mates Nick and Delon at Twickenham :-) Might be a quiet day at the club today, as I bumped into half of Billingham at the station this morning, in particular Colin Wakenshaw so it WILL definitely be quiet on Greenwood Road. Fortunately he is in the west stand and me in the east, but I suspect that if I was to purchase a referee radio to hear the referee during te match, I would hear someone commenting in the background about his performance and level of visual impairment; with a broad teesside accent.

I know, I know, I know. It’s nearly February and this is my first post of the 2010. After a flurry of posting activity towards the end of 2009, I sort of lost impetus. To be honest, I have been away for three out of the last four weeks including 3 of the weekends – all with work – but the reality is; the snow was just sapping the will out of me. Every time I planned to make a post, I hesitated to see what the weather was going to do..... and it snowed, and then it snowed and now today...aaaggghhhhhhhhh!!!! However there comes a point where there are things to say and believe it or not, I have had complaints about NOT posting. Even one sarcastically commented on the fact that my blog may not be GREAT, but it’s GOOD enough to be missed! Anyway, that and a few others have stirred me in to action.

I think the first thing that I need to highlight is that the club; YOUR club suffers at times like this. Our overheads are pretty much fixed; the power, heating, water etc, they don’t go way when the snow comes. Even staffing costs to an extent remain the same; we can send a few people home but last minute makes it hard for those already booked to work. What does all this mean; well no rugby means no income which in turn means we make a loss. We don’t have the luxury of passing trade like many other clubs so we suffer when we can’t play or train. When your costs are pretty much fixed, it means that your profit is pretty much linked to your sales and we need to make a certain level of turnover to break even. We have a good month and we make profit, we have a bad month we make a loss! In a nutshell, that’s what keeps me awake at night. What helps me sleep at night however is the loyalty and the support that YOU our members show to this club. On at least two occasions that I know of, instead of Saturday afternoons being a dead duck with no rugby and no club, you have gathered in your numbers and made the Saturday’s into Heineken Cup Day’s. You have spent the day in your club and on one occasion when the weather got that bad, almost got locked in... but what you have done is keep us ALIVE! Your use of the club, the hard earned money you have spent over the bar has made the difference. I thank you.

On a positive note, you will have noticed that in the last couple of weeks we have taken delivery of our new furniture. This expenditure has not helped with the above, but we were already committed. Well done to Colin Gibson for his choice! The new furniture combined with the recent re-decoration has made a massive difference to the look and feel of the club. The snug with its leather chairs and new tables really looks smart. We can truly boast a function room and corporate hospitality suite now to compare with some of the best in the area. Do me a favour.. no bar diving.. we can’t afford to break them J. This week we will be taking delivery of the 3 sofas and along with the small leather sitting stools and the some coffee tables, we will have a really comfortable seating area. This is a call to all families in the club and in particular those parents who come down on a Sunday morning and drop their kids off for training. Come in and have a Cappuccino or a Latte. We have great coffee, we (will) have comfortable sofas, bring your newspaper and take a time out. We even have wireless Internet connection for those who like the Starbuck’s feel – and our coffee is better!! J Now we don’t have the sofas yet, but why not come and try our new dining experience; remember we do a great Sunday lunch. Now I know the weather may play havoc with matches tomorrow, but why not give yourself a day off; don’t make dinner and come to the club and have your Sunday lunch. I’ll be there so I hope to so LOTS of you tomorrow.

On a rugby note, the one match of note was last week’s 1^st XV win at Gateshead 41:0. I understand from Chris that we were looking very sharp; and that after a long gap between matched too. Well done guys. Add this to Sandal losing and it was a GREAT day. Sandwiched in between call offs and cancellations it almost went unnoticed, but we are ‘top of the league’ again. Our destiny is in our own hands!

In other matches, the Colts beat Percy Park away 12:10 on Saturday but lost to Acklam on Sunday 17:12 (I think). Both matches were decided in last minutes of the game making them tense affairs.

In the Youth Section, the U10s beat Darlington away 60 points to 15. Well done lads and especially to Matt Olly; man of the match.

I attended the 6^th annual Burns Supper last Friday night. Another great night and thanks goes to Mick Conlon for putting it together and to Budgie for toasting the Haggis and to Paul Burgum and Carrie Wilson for toasting the lassies and the ladies respectively. Unfortunately I had to leave before the Ceilidh started and missed the dancing and the music.

I have lots more to say and do; I have a couple of months of photos of the month to catch up on, some results and updates, but I’m going to save them for later. I am not sure what today is going to bring.. I am currently looking at 3” to 4” of snow and the potential of another white-wash!! Our sponsors today are P&I Design and Carillion. Well it’s that time of year, when we reflect on the past and make plans for the future. It’s that time of year when you think about what you have achieved as an individual, family or team, group or community; was it a good year or not? Did I make the world a better place last year? Did I do something to make myself feel proud (no I am not going to break out into song....yet!) It’s that time of year when you think; what could I do better next year?

It’s been a Good year for Billingham Rugby Club, but maybe not a Great year!

On the rugby front, we held more than our own in our first season in North 1 East (as it is known now) and at one point we were well in with a promotion shout. Could we have done better? Could we have got promoted? The answer is yes and yes, but Ce La Vie! We can always do better, as individuals and as part of a team but it gives us the opportunity this season and this coming year to make it a Great year. Promotion is realistic and if we win each of our remaining games – we will be promoted! It’s in our hands.

Our seconds have a new name and a new League. The Lions enjoyed their first half season in the Candy League and although struggled against some teams opposition can be proud of their performance so far.

The thirds have gone from strength to strength and with some old boys coming back are putting out a real strong side week after week. Next year with some colts turning 18 and being available for front row and looking for senior rugby, we should be looking to build a 4^th side for 2010-2011 – one of them being a real Saturday veterans side.

The Colts have been under new leadership this season with Wayne Finney, and the U17s having had a successful close to their last season have mixed in well this season as U18s with the U17s. We are putting out sides on both Saturday and Sunday in two leagues. In the Saturday league, they have only been beaten once and have a real chance of winning that league if they can win the return match against Westoe – oh and will all their other matches J. There is also the Cup which start soon with a match against old rivals West Hartlepool.

As for the Youth section, I am sure Budgie will summarise 2010 in his own way, but we are now boasting 10 junior sides as well as 2 colts and 3 senior teams. It’s been a Good 2010, but I know talking to many of the coaches that they felt they missed out on the Cups. We were County Champions at U16 and U13, but could have been won at least 2 other age groups. Maybe next year will be our Great year!

In representative rugby we definitely had a Great year. We had many players at various age groups represent the County. We had many at U16s and other junior ages as well as representative college rugby. But the highlights have to go to Danny Dixon who represented England Colleges and Tom Kill who represented England U16A. Great stuff guys. We had 3 full County squad members last year with 2 playing and Michael Evans starting on several occasions. A new position for Mike this season, but if he gets another couple of starts he will get his County Cap this year. Peter and Joe still have years in the tank over him too!

Ken Potts retired last year after serving the club for so long. He has started to come down on occasions now he has settled into retirement and it’s Great to see him back. Colin Gibson has settled into the new Commercial Manager role and with Sue and Louise has build a Great new team. He has been active building up the business in the club and the last 6 months have been the best on record. I think Colin has had a Great start to his tenure but knowing Colin he will think it’s only a Good start J

Sadly we lost a few of our friends last year. Ian Maul passed away back in February, JJ Morris in August and Peter Griffiths in October. We will remember them fondly.

We had a start albeit a false start on the club refurbishment. Money as usual was the issue but we are now under way with the second phase. The flooring and carpets have been replaced, the shop relocated and the benches removed. We have been re-decorated – well nearly - and this will be finished soon. In January we get new tables and chairs throughout – leather diners for the snug (whoohh!!) and leather sofas, coffee tables and pouffies for the main room to keep the Old Farts (Original) happy (well you know what I mean – as happy as they will ever get). I did tell Colin I thought we had plenty of pouffies already but hey it’s nearly 2010!! J

We have seen some Great improvements in communication. Lisa Pearson has done a Great job as Comms Officer since she took over and also a Great job with the Summer Fayre (inaugural she keeps reminding me). Chris Adnett has been working as Projects Development Officer and has recently completed our application for some serious grounds work to improve health and safety as well as disabled access to pitches. Great job Chris – so far! Believe it or not, even the committee have improved this year. We have had more meetings, are more agile in our decision making and communicate better. In and before you ask – the answer is NO! We know it’s only the beginning and I still think we have some way to go to even be Good. What we need is more people volunteering to take on small areas of responsibility. Following my last request, I would like to thank Claire Brewis (mum of Mark from the Colts) who has agreed to become our Projects Officer and work with the committee, Colin and others to ensure projects such as the new furniture etc is planned and completed (by others I can assure her) on time, to budget and done properly. Claire, welcome on board and I am sure you will do a Great job in the months ahead – thanks.

It’s also been noticeable the number of parents coming down on a Saturday to watch the seniors as well as the seniors getting involved with coaching the juniors. This swells numbers on both days and we have seen this with gate receipts been an all time high in 2009. I met with a gentleman who was only staying in the area for a 6 month period earlier in the year and found that Saturday afternoon’s at Greenwood Road became an un-missable part of his weekly activities. He commented on thoroughly enjoying the high quality rugby and the friendly atmosphere. I also understand that in the last few months we have had our first visits from our new neighbours from the new housing development over the road. Welcome to you all.

For me, well I retired from being involved with coaching, having started with Josh when he was 5 and after 12 years decided it’s time to become a Dad and watch him play rather than having to watch through the eyes of a coach. I took up refereeing last year – fantastic. I thoroughly recommend any player, or ex-player to sit the course and try refereeing. It improves your game; you see the game with a different view and it’s really enjoyable. You just have to learn to block out the comments from the sideline! L

What does 2010 hold for us? Well most of that depends on each of us as individuals as teams and as a community. Promotion? More representative honours, England shirts or County Caps? 4 senior teams? What is certain is that we can make Billingham Rugby Club a Great place to play rugby, socialise and just belong. My resolution? To be a better Chairman! To be more approachable, to include more people, to get more people involved (bribery and other forms of coercion may be required) and to ensure we take a step closer to delivering on our vision of being the “Leading Family Rugby Club in the North”.

Finally from me, I have really enjoyed being your Chairman in 2009. It’s been my most enjoyable year to date and I feel we are on the cusp of an exciting future with lots of change all round, but not just any old change – Great change! What I ask of you is patience, respect for each other and your company – the same company I have enjoyed throughout 2009. Together, let’s make 2010 a Great year for Billingham Rugby Club. I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a peaceful and healthy 2010. Lets go from being Good to Great in 2010

...but the fire is so delightful...

I know I missed a post last week, but there wasn’t really much to report due to the weather. The week before, the 1sts had a good win at Carlisle as we started the second half of the league season. The 2nds had no game and the Candy League finished at the half way point with the Lions in 9^th place. As the league now splits into two, we have a chance to go on and win the second half of the season. The 3rds and the Colts were at home. The Colts started slowly but once they got going looked unstoppable against Consett in their league, eventually winning 34:0 (I think). The 3rds however, were the success story of the day. Now I know I have been complaining lately about lack of results well; I would like to thank all those 3^rd team players who gave me the score on the day. Problem was, not one of them was the same!!! So I am going to use the law of averages, applying a combination of Mean and Most and post the result as a Win against West Amateurs 54:14. It was also pleasing so see so many faces from years gone by. It’s made me rethink whether or not to hang my boots. I had a good chat with Geoff Hurst who played. He asked if he could only play 20 minutes but ending up playing the whole match, scoring two tries in man of the match performance. He also said he would be down on Boxing Day.

Last weekend was called off across the board and with no function booked it looked like it could be a bleak day for the club; however, in true club spirit and with a little help from the weather, and back to back Heineken cup matches, we had a great day – a real club day and the bar takings were even up on the previous week!

Great to so many people down for Carol singing on Sunday evening – another good evening with everyone involved. Well done to the soloists of which my youngest daughter Jess was one (proud dad J) and also to the performance of the evening from the 4 Kings of the Orient. Special thanks to Rob and Margaret for putting on the evening and managing to get through some last minute hiccups (like no song sheets or lyrics oops!) Well done everyone.

I am not sure what is occurring on Boxing Day with the weather situation as we have another layer added to that already there overnight. Irrespective, there will be some sort of games being played and the running order stands as described by Colin in the Youth Blog. In addition to Lads v Dads etc, lets remember the main reason we play rugby on Boxing Day and that’s to remember Dave Blake. The Memorial match kicks off at 13:30 and will be referred by Dave’s brother Derek. The Colts will be playing the 3rds just before 12:00 to allow some of the Colts to play for Joe’s Young Bucks.

New Years Eve tickets are in high demand and we may have to limit sales. Members get priority first as always but as they are in short supply we will have to limit allocations – block booking of 10-15 tickets just isn’t going to happen I am afraid until. So if you want yours go and get them NOW!

I think that’s about it from me this week. Another week closer to Christmas and half way through the season.

The 1^st XV finished off the first half of the season last week on a low – losing to Sandal in the league by 21 points to 17. Apparently we lost the game in the first 20 minutes but gave a good account of ourselves after that. These comments are not my own as I wasn’t there, but they do seem to be a consensus from the good and the brave J. This leaves us 2^nd after 13 matches with 22 points from 11 wins and just the 2 defeats. We are 2 points behind Sandal who have 24 points with only 1 defeat but 6 points clear of Rovers in 3^rd. It’s no consolation, but I received an e-mail this week from a member of Sandal called Tim Broadbent. I thought it was worth quoting verbatim: “Fantastic game of rugby played with a high level of skill and commitment. Refreshing to see 2 sides wanting to play rugby and not keep the ball up there jumpers. Still early in the season but hopefully both sides will be playing in a higher league next season.” We are only half-way there and there are another 13 matches ahead including Sandal visiting Greenwood Road. If we perform over the second half of the season the same as the first but reverse the decision against Sandal when they visit here we should be in with a good chance.

The Candy League also reached the half way point last week. I understand that although the seconds were actually beaten on the day by Mowden Park, the fact they couldn’t field a front row means we get the points and the match was played to decide on the bonus points. I also understand that we gave a good account of ourselves and the game was in the balance until MP brought on a Fijian who scored 4 tries in a spell of 10 minutes to win the match and get the bonus point. We have finished 8^th after the first round of matches and now the league gets split into two for the remainder of the season with the top 7 in one league and bottom 7 in the other league. The goal now for the Lions is to go on and win the bottom half league and for a first year in the Candy League would be a fantastic foundation to build on. I still can’t understand some players who would rather play for another club, hoping to get in their 1^st XV when our 2nds are playing at a higher level than their 1^st XV anyway!! Beyond me J

I keep asking but no one answers me, so I can’t give you any update on the 3^rdsor the Sunday Colts. I know the Saturday Colts had no game last week. The Youth results are posted by Colin in the Youth blog.

We are about to enter into phase 3 of our refurbishment. You will have noticed a re-decoration over the last couple of weeks by our new House Officers; well next up is new furniture throughout, including tables, chairs, sofas and a good upgrade of the furniture in the snug. It all takes time, palling and a lot of money. To which it wouldn’t be one of my usual posting without a little, tincy-wincy rant. Billingham Rugby Club is about YOU! Without YOU it does not exist! However, like all small communities, we are a co-operative, a collective an old-fashioned community with a caring, sharing set of values. We look out for each other, we help each when we are in need, we support each other when times are hard and we laugh and enjoy each other’s company. Yes, I am talking about You, our members, our club our community. Now can you imagine a situation, where each team decided to do something for themselves and only themselves. Imagine that if to do that they had to raise money and imagine in order to raise the money they had to basically stop using the club so much because they couldn’t afford it. Yes, we are getting towards that time of year, no I don’t mean Christmas; the time for giving, but the Tour season – the time for taking. If every team went on tour and raised £5,000 each, that would equate to about £50-75,000 in money raised. That’s about exactly the amount of the grant we have applied for that has taken several months and lots of people’s effort. So in the spirit of Christmas and our unique community, raise your money and enjoy your tours; I know I have been a many, but for the sake of YOUR club, remember we need YOU. We need you in our bar buying our food and drink, spending time with your mates, going to the quizzes and just being down the club on social events that aren’t just about YOU but about us ALL.

Talking of which check out the news site; Carol Service is Sunday 20th December – a real club night; let’s see if we can players and parents, WAGs down for a night of carol singing in Billingham Rugby Club style J. Boxing Day matches will be on Saturday 26^th. Keep an eye out for the running order and the format. I also understand that many youth teams are holding a Christmas Dinner – excellent this is the type of events we need, because they use the club at quiet times and with the catering and the bar ensure the club can make some money.

I think that’s about it for now – have some other stuff but will save until early next week including the winner of the October photo competition. Can you also check to see if you have you November ones sent for judging please.

Anyway as I said at the beginning of this post, the season is half way over, but we have to hold to what we’ve got, because it does make a difference if we make it or not, and as far as the club is concerned we got each other and we’ll give it a shot, because we may only be half way there but we’re living on a prayer and together we’ll make it I swear!

Well sorry folks but I am away this week. I doubt this will make me popular, but I can assure you I do it for you, but today I email you using my blackberry whilst watching NZ beat France convincingly in the group stages of the Dubai 7's. It's hot!! This is what rugby is all about! 3 years ago this ground didn't exist. It was just desert. Now it's a 45,000 seater stadium......and its just scaffolding with benches. I doubt it's rain proof but hey we have a scaffolding stand. Maybe we can just extend and build our own :-). They do music...so do we although not for a while. They do beer and food...so do we! They have dancers... Now there's an idea... Billingham Belles.. I'll supply the pom poms :-). When I say I do it for you.. I'm working hard, networking looking for sponsors to pay for us to put a team in. Well we can dream can't we?
On a serious note I am disappointed to find out that we have members from last year who have'nt renewed their membership. 3 or 4 junior teams are not paid up, half of the 2nd and 3rd team playing tomorrow are nut paid up and none of the WAGs are. If you enjoy being apart of this club, playing or socialising then pay your social membership and keep the club developing. Come on people, its your club but you need to be a member and we need to be able to rely on your membership fees. You know who you are and I don't want to have to embarrass you be naming you. By the way, paying a fiver towards your membership does not exclude you!!!
I had contact from a gentleman in Saudia Arabia last week. Malcolm keep on reading the blog and thanks for getting in contact. Malcolm Brown was a colts county coach about 14 years ago but left to go work abroad.

I hear one of our stalwarts of the club and a current 2nd team second row has decided to go and join Stockton. Well for one I'll miss you and I think you will realise that although 1st team rugby is special, its a short career and your mates will be around longer.

I was away last week at Head Quarters where I watched a much improved but still average looking England side struggle to impose themselves against an under par looking All Blacks team. Everyone has their own opinion on England and although I am not one that usually expresses any opinion J, I did. Unfortunately it was after enjoying the delights on offer post-match at Twickenham and then later in Richmond. I decided to express my views on England’s weaknesses and the average nature of the New Zealand performance. Problem is I decided to share them with Nick Eastwood, Delon Armitage, Zinzan Brooke and Jerry Collins. So why is he name-dropping you are asking... well you know me I was trying to secure and end of season dinner speaker! Delon did agree (if available) to speak at our end of season dinner but the problem is I am not sure if he will remember me, the conversation or who I am. Never mind but I will try and follow up. One can only live in hope. Not sure Jerry was happy about my opinion on his hairstyle or Richie McCaw being a cheat!! I can confirm he won’t be speaking at the end of season dinner! L

Anyway, it may not have been a league day last weekend but there were some very important cup games going on. The 1sts got a bye when Consett withdrew but the 2nds and 3rds both had matches. I was kept up to date during the England match with the 2nds team score and I understand I missed a ‘ding-dong’ of a local derby, with us eventually beating Stockton with a try in the final 5 minutes, winning the game 25:18 (I think). I don’t have the 3rds score so can’t pass it on but I know the Colts won 14:12. I would really appreciate if someone from the 3rds would keep me updated on their results.

I had an e-mail from Kuala Lumpur last week. I am delighted that the website and the blogs keep people in all parts of the world informed on our progress, whether they be existing members travelling on business or holiday, or ex-members living overseas. For the latter, if you are reading this, you can still be a member living overseas you know. Just contact me and I will send you a membership card and our bank details J. The good thing was that the e-mail from KL was from an existing member on her travels who had picked up on my moaning about too much being done by too few and has offered her assistance. Fantastic, and thank you – will follow up shortly. But she also came up with a great idea. In addition to our photo of the month, I am launching a new competition. Please send me a photo of yourself wearing a Billingham Rugby shirt when you are on your travels and let’s see what exotic locations we can get our shirts photographed in before the end of the season.

We have the 1sts and the Colts at home on Saturday, both with important games. The 1sts play Pontefract and after Percy Park need to respond with a win, especially with Sandal next week. The Colts similarly after losing their last game against Westoe need to beat Percy Park to stay in contention of winning the league. The 2nds are riding high at the moment after winning their last couple of matches and travel on Saturday to Middlesbrough where a win would see them move up another place in the league.

For those who just can’t get enough of live rugby, in addition to Saturday there is a full fixture list on Sunday with the 7s, 8s and 9s at home along with the 14s and 15s in the morning followed by the Colts in the afternoon.

Okay, maybe I was a little strong last week; maybe I had just had a bad week, maybe it just needed saying! Anyway you look at it we should all be pointing in the same direction and looking to achieve the same goals. So for my part, I’m going to be positive in this post. I know I usually only post once a week on a Friday. If I get chance to post again later in the week, I suspect some will miss this one – sorry.

I find myself away again this week (sunny Helsinki – NOT!), and I am also working at the weekend, so will miss out on matches. Before anyone says anything the tone of last week’s post had nothing to do with the weekends performances. Only three games on Saturday and two of them resulted in the 1sts and the Colts both losing their first game of the season. However, (remember I am being positive) congratulations to the 2^nd team who won away at Sunderland. Call me grumpy but it p***es me off (and I usually avoid any form of language) that the Candy League home page says “We welcome Hartlepool Rovers RFC into the league”. What, they don’t welcome us?? Anyway the 2nds have now moved up one place from 11^th to 10^th. Now we all know they have taken some big defeats, but we played the ‘bigger’ teams away and early in the season. It puts it into perspective when this weekend Blaydon put 74 points past Westoe and Tynedale put 37 past West. It’s a tough league with some teams who are very well positioned early on. It’s a long season and if we keep improving I think we may just surprise a few people. That’s if they even know we are in the league J.

Anyway, no league fixtures this weekend, so have a good one; I won’t be there L

I have been away all week and have just got back and so a little off the pace with “what’s occurring”. I don’t have much to contribute this week but following a few comments I will be updating the scores in the fixture lists ASAP as promised (something else for me to do L). We managed to get September’s photo of the month up on the home page (thanks to Colin Bell who does the website) but we still don’t have many candidates for October. I will have them judged but if we don’t get a better response for November I will cancel it.

It’s a shame really, many people have commented on what a good idea it is. Problem is everyone likes the idea, everyone has ideas of their own but very few people get of their **** and do anything about it. You can throw as many sayings, phrases and metaphors out there as you want: ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’, ‘together we can’, ‘community spirit’, ‘collaborate to innovate’ etc and so on. In the end it means absolutely bloody nothing if people don’t make the effort. I can’t count the number of suggestions that have been thrown at me over the last 6 months or so, but what do you expect me to do with them??? I’m already off my ****. It’s the same old story; people take things for granted, expect everything, give very little and moan when it’s not to their liking. It’s one thing to complain, criticise and suggest changes it’s another to take it upon yourself to act upon them. A very bright bloke I used to work for once told me that “innovation is not about the idea, it’s about the execution”. How can it be innovative if it’s just an idea!

Any way looks like I have more to say than I thought.

I went to the quiz and cards night last week. Unfortunately there were only 4 teams. Every team won something (as is usual) and the Cards winner won £50. So over the last two quiz nights we have paid out about £400 and it only costs £2 to enter!! All that and a entertainment – bargain! The best thing though is it’s a really good night. It’s a good quiz, there’s good humour, Rob who hosts the night (for free I might add) is hilarious and it’s a good social evening. I know I’ll get a knacking for this, but it’s a shame we don’t see many social members down. There’s been a few that have come down for the last few evenings (and you are very welcome) and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, but for a club with over 300 social members we may get about 12 come down. I know times are hard but it’s amazing how much money we can all save up for our tours. Are we getting a little selfish? Are we forgetting that it’s about the whole club? Maybe it’s just me! Anyway, if we don’t get a few more down at the next one then I think we will have to can that too. It’s the first Friday of the month unless informed otherwise, and I understand that the next one is being moved from Friday 4^th December (because of a Christmas booking) to Sunday 6^th. It will start earlier (6pm I believe but to be confirmed) in order to finish for about 8:30 at the latest. Support your club!

Having had my whinge, I would like to thank a few people who have been beavering away in the background. I am sure I will miss someone out and upset them, but apart from those who we all know about, Lisa Pearson has been working on a revamp of the youth section of the website, Danny Robbo and Mark Schiller have started work on the jobs around the club which will culminate with a re-decoration hopefully before Christmas, Chris Adnett has been working on a grant application which is due to be submitted within the next 2 weeks; and for most of the rest of us it’s been business as usual. Thanks to Tony Burgum for pushing ahead with the Sports Charity and apologies I couldn’t make it last week.

What we need is a few more volunteers to step up and get involved? When the tumbleweed has finished blowing across the screen, if you want to get involved then please e-mail me or grab me tonight, tomorrow or Sunday in the club where I will watching different teams and socialising (it’s something members of a club do!!)

On a lighter note, I made a comment last week about Billingham Rugby Cub being better than Bondai beach. For the record that came from John Davies (as if you didn’t know). Well here’s something you may not know – he meant it and John and Judie aim to be back to our shores early in the new year for good!! John, Judy, can’t wait to have you back!! x

Autumn has arrived – the dark nights are here, the temperature’s dropped , the rain is wet and it’s great! J It’s at this time of year that the real sense of our ‘community’ comes together. Billingham rugby club is in effect a micro-community of its own and it’s the community sense that makes me feel proud to be a part of it. Last Friday I attended an 18^th birthday of a lad whom I have known since he was 6 when he started as a mini. Saturday night was the annual Halloween party. I couldn’t stay all night but was there until just after 8pm to take some pictures http://www.flickr.com/photos/markatstoneville/sets/72157622718572406/ There was a good mix of senior, colts, social and family members. Then on Sunday was the junior Halloween party or Hullaballoo. But the event that brings it all together for me is Fireworks night. I don’t think I have ever seen such a crowd at the club. It’s great to walk around and see so many friends from throughout the club and from the local community. It’s one of the few ‘whole’ club events where everyone from kids to grandparents come together. There was with at least one family (Blenkinsopps) with four generations in attendance and I am sure other families can boast the same. Hats off to Colin, Sue, Louise and the rest of the team for extending the club out into the wider community J. Maybe we should think of how we can do more like this .... and you guessed it I have a cunning plan, but not for distribution yet.

A mixed set of results last week. Another win for the 1sts in the league and we remain unbeaten at the top after 9 games. I thought Morpeth were very gracious after the match on our win and wished us well for the season and on our promotion ambitions. I do have one question though? Why do we seem to see so many exchange referees at the moment? I can see the need to develop referees but surely this should be to the advantage of the fixture and the teams participating. When referees are trained they are told that the game is not about them it’s about the players. Why then would anyone want to put a referee into a position whereby they could be questioned during or after a game. For the avoidance of doubt, I didn’t watch the 1^st XV game as I was with the 2nds on a different pitch and have no comment upon the specific performance of the referee in the 1st XV match. However, I was taken aback after the match when the Morpeth President announced to the whole club that the referee was not only 20 (young for a referee at this level I would suggest) but was an ex-Morpeth player!! Surely this is an unnecessary exchange and one that could easily have been avoided by the Northumbrian Referee’s society. Far be it for me to questions their wisdom....?? The mind boggles. Anyway onto this weekend. Let’s see if we can achieve the perfect start and get 10 out of 10 and let’s home we don’t get another exchange referee from er... let’s say Halifax!!

The seconds were beaten 71:12 and in my view I am not sure the score reflected the game. They scored 10 tries to our 2 but this week was a far better performance than against West previously. There was commitment right until the end. Before the match it was agreed we needed to cut out the penalties and tighten up defence in the midfield area. After the game we said we need to cut out the penalties and tighten up the defence in midfield J – at least we know where to improve. We also need to keep hold of what little possession we get and use it better. It’ll come. Oh and did I mention I got 15 minutes at the end of the match and fulfilled an ambition of playing for Billingham with my son. Did I also mention that in the last 15 minutes the score was only one try apiece??? J

The 3rds had a good win last week – 41:5 I think. A great result guys and getting stronger every week. I would really appreciate it if someone would e-mail me the scores so I can accurately post them on the website.

Good luck to all teams this weekend 1^st and 2nds Home to Old Crossleyans and Horden respectively, 3rds and Colts away to Wensleydale and Wigton respectively. We have a full fixture schedule on Sunday with 13s, 14s and Colts at home. Juniors KO off at 11:00 and Colts at 12:30. What better way to build up an appetite for your Sunday lunch.

There has been a lot of other stuff going on over the last few weeks that I will be able to share in more detail with you all later. We are looking at grant applications to develop better access for the community to the pitches and to the side and front of the club. We have appointed new House Officers – Mark and Danny and they have commenced work already. They have a list of major and minor projects and have started in the Ladies toilet – say no more ;-)

I posted September photo of the month last week but have been disappointed by the response for October so far – surely you parents out there have some photos!!

There has been an e-mail flying around this week about the safety of boots with blades. Let me assure everyone that the committee is not slow to respond to this and it will respond but in a responsible and considered way and not as a knee-jerk reaction to an e-mail. We will research it properly and come back with an appropriate response. We need to understand the consequences both ways of making any changes and we need to think through the impact and implementation of any change. It’s easy to make a comment, but in reality it’s never that simple to ‘just do it!’

Thanks for all the feedback on the blog. I got e-mails this week from Australia and the Ivory Coast and is just highlights we are a close knit community when people want to know what we are up to so that they can feel involved even if they are 1000’s of miles away. The comment of the week for me was from John Davies who told me how much he misses the place and how it’s hit him and Judie harder since their last visit. It shows how special our club is when you get a comment like “I was laid on Bondi beach the other day, all the bronzed bodies about....and I thought.... ‘this just isn’t as good as Billingham rugby club, I’m off’ “

Quiz and Cards TONIGHT

Yes, it’s this evening. In case you all forgot it’s always the first Friday of the month (unless something comes up like New Year J). For those who have not attended before, we have a quiz followed by a Turn Your Cards game at the end of the night. Last month we had two winners, winning £200 and £50 respectively. The quiz is always keenly contested and is always a lot of fun. It’s usually over between 10:00 and 10:30 for those wanting an early night and kicks off about 8pm. Come on down and support your club whilst having a good laugh with your family and friends.

Yet again we had the 1sts and 2nds at home last week so I managed to keep an eye on both games.

Another great result for the 1sts against Ilkley, especially with some key injuries to Peter, Paul, Dave and Joe (sounds like a 60’s band) J. That’s the 3^rd time we have met Ilkley now and I have had the pleasure on every occasion of spending time with some of their senior members. Anyone who has not had chance to read the report on the Ilkley website should do so. It talks a lot about the differences between the clubs, our relative background and the different challenges we face. It’s also a fair and complimentary review of the match and our club and players and the referee!! I wish more clubs had their honest and friendly approach to our great game. In many ways we are very similar; we are both clubs in small towns; we are both in the shadow of ‘professional’ clubs; great mini and youth policies; and totally reliant upon our members and the community. We obviously face different challenges but one that is common is the need to integrate as much as possible with our community upon whom we rely so heavily. I am looking forward to another 1sts/2nds day tomorrow at Morpeth. I know it won’t be an easy game, but the next 3-4 matches will really indicate how far we have come since last year and it start tomorrow.

The 2nds did not fare so well last week, going down heavily to a very well organised West Hartlepool team. Some say the Candy League has come one year to soon for us. I’m not sure I agree. We will of course struggle against the likes of Blaydon, Tynedale and last year’s winners, West. But one of the reasons we struggle is due to the inconsistent nature of the players availability and the performance and effort. One of the reasons we have lost quality players over recent years is due to lack of quality opposition. We now have the opposition but it will take time to develop a 2^nd team that is capable of competing at the highest level. In addition to attracting players back we need to ensure that those that do play get the support of the club. You could argue that the 2nds need more TLC at the moment that the 1sts. Once we recover from the spate of injuries that has dogged the 1^st XV over recent weeks we will be able to get those who have stepped up back. We also need to support the colts. They need experienced voices around them and time to develop. They will have the odd good game and the odd bad game but they need to feel that they are part of the team. Most of all the 2nds need players who want to play; and that means give a minimum of 100% for a minimum of 80 minutes. There is nothing more soul destroying that walking or jogging through a game. We have the benefit of rolling subs; let’s use them. Surely it’s better for players to run themselves into the ground for 15 minutes (I know that’s about my limit!), take a break and then come back on. We don’t want players who hide when the going get’s tough. Maybe it’s a season too early, maybe it’s a season too late; either way playing at this level will only improve the quality and performance of those involved and I suspect that next year, once we have had time to adjust we will see a different ‘team’. One final note; hat’s off to BrownDog who has kept this team’s spirit up against the odds. Tomorrow will be interesting; a mix of youth, experience and some players needing to prove me and others wrong.

I know the 3rds suffered another defeat last week; but again there is another team in transition. With some older heads back in the squad a real team spirit is developing and one that we should be proud off. Let’s get some of the colts involved to add some youth. I have a mission to accomplish this season and that’s to play senior rugby with my son. I’m not fit, but I’m hoping that in the not too distant future I may get the opportunity to achieve this lifelong ambition. Once done I suspect I’ll get the bug back and the thought of running out with some of my old mates is enticing. All I have to do is watch the likes of Steve Potts giving 100%+ at 45. It’s what it’s all about!!

Remember it’s the Halloween dance tomorrow night and the Hullabaloo for the youth section on Sunday. Get your outfits out and let’s see you down the club.

Blazing Glory

Another week and another fantastic result. Yet again, I chose to watch the 2nds who also beat Rovers but therefore missed out on what appears to have been a full blooded affair with an exciting finish at the Friarage.

Depending upon which papers you read during the week and who you spoke to last Saturday, it would appear that there are some ‘unsubstantiated’ rumours about our supporters. I refuse to respond to newspapers articles who don’t even have the courtesy to ask for a comment before publishing a one-sided view which is nothing more than third party tittle-tattle; especially from an alleged reporter who can’t even spell ‘Teessiders’. I’m a blogger not a journalist and therefore have no one to apologise too J let alone being an alleged professional!!! Anyway, regardless of rumour, biased comment or tittle-tattle, I think it’s important to remember who we are, the game we play and what we stand for.

I started playing rugby when I was 10 and saw my first International at Murrayfield when I was 13, England v Scotland 1980. England won the Grand Slam 30-18 and what a game it was; their first for 23 years. My friend and I got separated from the group we were with and I found myself in the middle of an open stand surrounded by large (I was only 13), noisy, slightly drunk locals! One of my overriding memories was how everyone was silent for the kicks and how everyone applauded and cheered as John Carleton scored his hat-trick (first England hat-trick in 56 years). I couldn’t even see the touchdown for cheering Scots. In the glory days, that’s what we did. Rugby was about sportsmanship. You cheered good play; irrespective of the side you supported. You were silent during kicks and you respected the referee and the whistle, whether playing or watching. Anyone who is a member of this club should know our motto and our values. Our mottos is displayed everywhere you look, our values should be as visible in every aspect of our behaviour; but these are only visible if you believe in them and live them. Our goal is to be the leading family, rugby club in the North; our values determine who we are and how we are seen by others.

I didn’t attend the game at Rovers last week so can’t comment on the specifics, but if we want to achieve our goal we need to better than the best; and I know we aren’t. In any small community there are always going to be a handful who think they are clever, smart or witty and then some who just don’t think at all. So to those few, do me a favour, if you’re not that bright then just be quiet and if you do think before you speak then remember who you represent and what we stand for. None of us are perfect and we all get excited; me included, but: referees make decisions we don’t agree with, live with it; some of the opposition supports aren’t very friendly, let them be; we like to win, but let’s not be smug; we hate to lose, but let’s be gracious in defeat. Let’s be positive in our support of our team and rugby in general and let’s leave the negative and antagonistic comments for Match of the Day.

Whilst on the topic of the glory days and tradition whatever happened to the blazer and the blazer badge. I have one of the old style blazer badges, hand-made from steel wool and it has adorned 3 blazers in my time at Billingham, no... I have not outgrown the others, they just got beer stained once too often! Anyway, to my point, several years ago we used to have suit carriers with No.1s hung in. Number 1s for those that don’t know are shirt, tie, blazer and trousers. All too often it’s jeans and club shirt and tie; sometimes only the tie. Come on guys , remember our traditions. Judie is looking into the feasibility of getting blazers with steel blazer badges. Now if you are interested, then the first 5 people to e-mail me will receive them at a discounted price.

Unfortunately I have today been informed that Peter Griffiths, recently retired rugby correspondent for the Evening Gazette has passed away. All his friends at Billingham Rugby Club send our deepest sympathy to his family at this sad time. Peter was a great supporter of rugby and a very good of Billingham. We will be observing a minutes silence before this afternoons matches in his memory.

Game of two halves

I was at home on Saturday, watching the 1^st XV and the Colts battle it out J. What is he on about I hear you cry?

In addition to 2 Presidents, we had a new sponsor for the game against Gateshead; Vickers Chisman and Wishlade. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dennis and his colleagues and guests for supporting the club and I hope they enjoyed their day. Thank you.

The 1^st XV continued their great start to the season and I am grateful for them doing this in such a way as to satisfy my personal request J With regards to the battle....I was stood between the two pitches, trying to watch both the 1^stsand the Colts. It’s not easy trying to fulfil my role as Chairman and a Dad at the same time!! Anyway at half time on both matches, both were beating their respective opposition, Gateshead and Northern by 31 point to nil. It was at this point that I managed to get a message on to the pitch of the identical scores and challenged the Colts to outscore the 1^sts. Interestingly they were both playing towards the ends next to each other in the second half and on at least two occasions tries were scored within a couple of seconds of each other. Exciting to watch but difficult to know where to point your camera!! Anyway, well done to both sides for winning in a convincing manner. The 1^st XV 59:0 and the Colts pipping them at the post 62:0.

In other matches the 2nds and 3rds both lost. The 2nds took quite a beating at Blaydon which only serves to highlight the vast differences between the standard of the teams and depth of the squads in the Candy league. The 3rds also highlight that again more depth would really help and maybe we are only a year away from adding a group of players to the senior squad on a regular basis. We are on the right track.

On a final note, there was an injury to a Northern player on Saturday against the Colts that required an ambulance. Fortunately I understand that the player is well and that it was not as serious as first thought. Our wishes on a speedy recovery go to him. I would also like to thank Northern for their sportsmanship during the game and the spirit in which it was played and it was good to see them staying on and having some old fashioned banter after the match.

Presedential Visit

We have 2 presidents at Greenwood Road today. Our own, Ian Brown and Durham County President, Dave Thompson. As always we are delighted and honoured to be able to welcome both Dave and Chris from the County. However, it looks like our honoured visitors are "hoping Gateshead can dent our unbeaten record". You would have thought a Durham team playing as consistently well as Bilingham would make the County proud. Let's show them how proud we are and send Gateshead home with their tail between their legs.

Autumn is here!

What a fantastic weekend for weather last week – results weren’t bad too. Another convincing win for the 1sts last Saturday, taking their 4 match average score to over 60 points. More importantly teams around us got beat leaving us clear at the top, BUT there are 22 games to go ;-) A tough match for the 2nds away at Tynedale but if we don’t play teams like this we won’t be able to measure our improvement. Away at Tynedale was highlighted at the beginning of the season as the tough one; never mind, we’ll get ‘em back when they visit Greenwood Road!!! Colts continued their unbeaten start to the season with a close game at Alnwick, winning through 19:18.

If you look at the Fixture tab you will now see that the results are being posted. I would be grateful if team managers and/or captains could post me the result please or come and find me and tell me. If the third team captain could give me the back results too I will get them posted. I also hope to add the Colts Sunday fixtures and results in the near future. I am looking into the Minis next.

Sunday was Registration and photo day for the youth section and it was great to see so many down again – you know it’s Autumn when you see hundreds of green and white hoops running around on a Sunday morning.

Interestingly we have had a couple of enquires in the last couple of weeks of players looking to come and join a ‘bigger’ club – both were from London looking to relocate. We are starting to get noticed from afar - long may it last.

Keith got himself a new camera last week and the latest craze now at the club (me included) is photography. So I was thinking that we should hold a ‘Best shot of the month’ competition. If you think you have a worthy entry for September email it to me. I will then arrange for them to judged and I will announce and show the Photo of the month. This is open to the whole club but MUST be a rugby photo from Billingham and taken in the month. So send me your best entry for September and for October, ‘let me see those fingers!!”

Finally, there will be some changes to the website over the next few weeks and I will keep you posted on those changes.

You may have also noted some maintenance and redecorating going on in the club. Many thanks to Tony Burgum for getting involved and if there are any more wiling volunteers we have plenty more to do.

Finally, this weekend is Sambuca weekend so good luck to you all – unfortunately I am away tomorrow night so can’t partake – damn!

How fortunes change

What a fantastic result at the weekend? Which one I hear you cry? Well let’s start with the main event. 71:16. Who would have believed it, well obviously no one at Darlington. Reading the Echo today:

“Evans brothers top 50 as Darlington are humbled”

“How fortunes change. Three years ago this result would have been unthinkable...”

“When they tried to emulate Billingham by running a penalty on their own 22 they dropped the ball and Shepherd waltzed through three tackles to go under the posts”

I unfortunately didn’t attend, deciding instead to watch the 2nds at home to Darlington and my son make his senior debut. In case you didn’t know the 2nds won 52 NIL. A total of 123 points put passed Darlo in an afternoon.

In other results, the 3rds lost away at Acklam (still waiting for confirmation on the score) and the Sunday Colts beat Durham City 38:10.

I don’t use my blog to express too many personal opinions, but when you look at the results at Darlington, and the demise of other clubs over recent years, Stockton and West purely as examples, you have to ask why? These are great clubs with long histories. To me it shows the fragility of rugby at this level and the need for good governance and to AVOID the mercenaries that exist in the game. I have nothing against professionalism, but at this level it takes away from the sport the true values of rugby; comradeship, loyalty and a sense of belonging that goes beyond the money in your boot.

Since the era of professionalism entered the sport of rugby, the views have been divided. If you look at the impact of professionalism on the game at the elite end; International and Premiership Rugby, there can be no argument that professionalism has benefited the sport. However, if you view the demise of teams like Orrell and when you see Blaydon put 145 points passed Manchester at the weekend, who couldn’t even raise a 2^nd team, you have to ask where it all went wrong.

I grew up playing club rugby in the colts, then worked my way through the 4ths, 3rds, 2nds eventually to have the honour of pulling a 1^st XV shirt. We know from last season; how many local teams could put out a 2^nd XV? I firmly believe in the sport being professional, but it belongs at the top end of the game. Proper governance of a rugby club should ensure that you live within your means; typically determined by the size of your support and the catchment area you play in. You pay a handful of players, you create resentment, but you can’t afford to pay them all. You attract talent but it’s not because they want to part of your success, it’s not because they want their kids to be a part of our youth section or the fact that have good craic on a Saturday night; no they come for the money. And when the money runs out so do they!

We are an amateur club, a family club, a community club. We have good craic, we play exciting rugby and we are enjoying ourselves. We have benefited from professionalism through the knowledge that our coaches have gained when professional players. Our journey has far to go, and we will have better times and I am sure some hard times, but we will do it the right way, our way, because we are Billingham Rugby Club; the best family rugby club in the region!

Week 3

Well it’s week 3 of the league season. Both 1sts and 2nds have Darlington, away and at home respectively. The 3rds are away at Acklam and the Colt’s have a week off.

Darlington as with us have won their first two games and as this is the first time we have met competitively; tomorrow is a big day for both teams. A W tomorrow will really upset the old pecking order – come on Billingham!!

Lions are looking for their first league win and field a mixed squad for tomorrow. A couple of last season regular 1^st team players coming back from injury appear in the team to add to a good solid start for the regulars. The squad is bolstered with the Colts not having a game. So far the Lions have been a little unfortunate and hopefully tomorrow they will get their 1^st win.

Being away last week I have to confess to not being aware of the 3rds result, but lets’ hope they can keep their performance from the beginning of the season going and maybe we can achieve a clean sweep tomorrow.

The Sunday colts team are at home to Durham City on Sunday so come on down have your lunch and give them your support before a lazy afternoon in the club again J

Weekend update

An excellent set of results on Saturday and a good day for the club.

Billingham beat Old Brodleians 66 : 0 with a superb all round performance. Our forwards dominated and got stronger as the game went on and our backs used this pressure to open up their defence. One of the best team performances in a while and good strong start to the campaign. Some excellent individual displays with Chris picking up MoM for the backs for his total leadership and Michael Evans for the forwards for an outstanding league debut at No.8. It would be wrong not to mention Peter Evans’ 41 individual points for his 5 tries and 8 conversions. Well done lads. Match Day 2 – Home to Carlisle this Saturday.

Billingham Lions were beaten 34 : 17 (I believe this was the correct score). For our first game in the Candy League, last minute drafts into key positions and some undoubted nerves over the level of opposition – a good result and one we can build on.

Billingham 3^rdXV drew at Hartlepool Old Boys 10:10 in a keenly contested match.

Colts put a mixed side of 17s and 18s together to take on Blaydon Colts before their 1^st XV played Otley in National Div 1. A fantastic result winning 22 : 7. This was the first time that this age group have beaten Blaydon in the 10 years they have been playing them so well done all round. I can tell you that they Blaydon were pretty much in shock after the game.

Ladies Day was enjoyed by many; only a few Ladies braved the wind and the cold; but they caught the eye of many a spectator. The spectators from Old Brods commented on the ‘view’ but did questions their sanity!! Well done girls! What we need for next year is more Ladies making the effort, some sunshine, less wind and maybe a disco for the after match party which was another success.

It was a great day commercially for the club and very timely after a lean summer.

Unfortunately I am away this weekend and will miss the Carlisle match – both 1^stXV and Colts at home and 2^ndXV away. Chris Emery is back and will have his camera with him as usual. I tool some shots last weekend of the Colts, 1^sts and a handful of the 2^nds so check them out on my Flickr site.

On a final note, unfortunately the Pirates game is cancelled on Wednesday due to Yarm being unable to field a front row. News of future fixtures will follow later. When I asked why all matches are played on a Wednesday I was told ‘because they arrrrre!’. Who am I to argue!

The 'R's' have it

Officially, the season ‘opened’ on Tuesday September 1^st, because as we all know; you can only play rugby when there is an ‘r’ in the month. And we have the U16s to thank for getting the season off to a flying start when they beat Mowden Park last night in the first official (not pre-season) match of the season for the club. Now if we include pre-seasons, then not only did the 1^sts beat Middlesbrough three weeks ago and Northern last week (to zero!!), the 2nds beat Seaton away two weeks ago. But in the end, it all comes down to tomorrow when the league season gets under way.

We welcome Old Brodleians to our club for the first league game of the season and our first game in North 1 (East). We also welcome Westoe 2^nds who play our 2^nd team, the Lions in their first Candy League game. The senior fixtures are completed with our 3^rds away at Hartlepool. Finally for tomorrow, the Colts are playing Blaydon colts as a warm match for Blaydon’s match at home to Wharfedale in National League 1. Good luck to all teams tomorrow. J

On a final point, we welcome Norton Pirates back next Wednesday who are playing Yarm Pheonix under flood lights with a 7:15 ko. I am sure by Wednesday you will all be wanting a another fix of live rugby so come down, bring the family and watch an entertaining game and support the Pirates and your club.

It answer to the question, why are the Pirates playing on Wednesday; “because they arrrrr!!”
